If you like to drive at a quick pace through the woods you’ll love racing in the Grand National Cross-Country series. Each event has a fun course set up that’s around 4 miles long and you do a certain number of laps. Some of it is open fields, dirt roads and two-track trails in a forest. You may have thought about entering an event near you, but aren’t sure what the rules are for machines and equipment. Provided here are the official rules of the GNCC. Take a look and learn what’s required. We’re also including some photos of the first race of 2017 in Palatka, Florida.
Schedule: UTV/SS racing will be conducted on Saturday at 6 Select Events Only. (Please refer to the Series Schedule for events.)
- Race Length:
The UTV race will be a (1) hour race starting at 4:00 pm, or as soon thereafter as possible.The Single Seat (SS) race will be a (30-45) minute race following the Youth ATV race, or as soon thereafter as possible.
- Minimum Age Requirement:
• UTV competitors (drivers and passengers) must be at least 18 years of age at the time of the event.
- • Single Seat competitors must be at least 16 years of age at the time of the event.
- UTV Teams: Competitors must register as a Team. A Team consists of a driver and a passenger. Teams may switch passenger from event to event, but not during an event.
- Drivers are responsible for the actions of their entire pit crew.
- Teams will be disqualified for driving on a GNCC course during the 7 days prior to the first day of the event.
- GNCC Racing does not provide medical insurance for competitors, and we urge you not to compete without it. Medical insurance is the sole responsibility of the competitor.
B. COMPETITOR ELIGIBILITY AND CLASSIFICATION:
- XC1 Pro/XC2 Pro Sport: The following riders are required to compete in either the XC1 or XC2 class:
- Top 15 overall drivers from previous year’s GNCC;
- Top 3 overall drivers from previous year’s TORC, Best-In-The-Desert (BITD), SCORE and WORCS UTV series;
- Drivers placing 16-25 overall the previous year are eligible, but not required to race XC1/XC2 class; or
- By Promoter Discretion.
- XC1 Pro/XC2 Pro Sport drivers must receive a Start Permission from GNCC prior to registering for any event.
- XC3 Pro-Am: The following drivers are eligible, but not required to compete in the XC3 Pro-Am class:
- Drivers placing 20-40 overall the previous year;
- Top 3 overall drivers from previous year’s Best-In-The-Desert (BITD), SCORE and WORCS Pro-Am UTV series; or
- By promoter discretion.
- Former GNCC, TORC, Best-In-The-Desert (BITD), SCORE and WORCS UTV national champions in the past 5 years are not eligible for the Pro-Am class.
- C. MACHINE ELIGIBILITY AND CLASSIFICATION:
- Production Rule: OEM motor and matching frame combination 4-wheel drive model required (matching year NOT required). Frame geometry must remain as designed by the OEM, including all suspension pivot points.
- XC1 Pro / XC3 Pro-Am / Amateur Modified: (0-1000cc) UTV Production models. Engine and suspension modifications permitted.
- XC2 Pro Sport / Amateur Limited: (0-1000cc) UTV Production models. The following limited items can be changed or added: tires, wheels, bumpers, tie-rods, radius rods, skid plates, air box, filter, fuel controller, exhaust, shock springs and OEM available shocks for designated model only. (For clarification: Suspension upgrades available through the OEM for a designated model are permitted.) Bed supports may be removed. Frame reinforcements, clutch and ignition changes are permitted. Aftermarket A-Arm and Ball joints are permitted, provided OEM geometry is maintained. Aftermarket production roll cages are permitted, provided OEM material specifications and OEM mounting locations are maintained. No other suspension, e.g., valve changes, or internal motor modifications permitted.
- Lites: (0-800cc) UTV Production models. Engine and suspension modifications permitted.
- Single Seat: (0-900cc) SS Production models. Engine and suspension modifications permitted.
- D. EQUIPMENT:
- Machine Width:
UTV machine width can be a maximum 64 inches (with 1” variance);
- SS machine width can be a maximum 59 inches.
- The following equipment is required for all machines:
- Four-point harness restraints, securely fastened on both occupants at all times;
- Full roll cage;
- Side-nets of adequate design and size so as to prohibit extension of extremities (i.e., arm, hand, leg) beyond cab of cart;
- Fully functioning Fire Extinguisher clearly mounted and easily retrievable by officials/the public; and
- Fully functioning Kill/Off Switch clearly marked and easily available for officials/the public to pull.
- The following gear is required for all competitors:
- Protective eyewear;
- Fireproof helmet or fireproof balaclava (head sock);
- Fire-proof gloves; and
- SFI 3.2/5 Dual-layer fire suit (1 or 2-piece jacket/pants), or an undergarment with a TPP value of 6 AND an SFI Single-layer fire suit (1 or 2-piece jacket/pants).
- All competitors with an assigned number must display their number on a number plate mounted on the rear of the machine. Numbers shall be a minimum of 6-inch blocked numbers. All numbers must be the same.
- Drivers contesting the series should comply with the number plate color code. (See, Class Chart).
- Rear tail/brake lights must remain on at all times.
- For the XC1 and XC2 classes only, no more than one (1) horn device per team is permitted for alerting competitors that are about to be overtaken. Horns must be activated by a button and not a switch. Air/electric horns are permitted; Sirens are prohibited. Horn volume and tone will be at the sole discretion of GNCC Racing. Otherwise, no horns, bells or other sound devices permitted in any class.
- Machine sound level cannot exceed 98 dB/A.
- Turbo and Supercharging are prohibited.
- Combustible engines only. No nitrous oxide or alcohol-based fuel permitted. Petroleum-based fuel only may be used. Fuel can only be carried inside the machine’s fuel tank and must be stored in approved containers.
- Machines may be tested by officials any time prior to, during or after the event.
