WHAT IT IS:

With the King of the Hammers UTV race presented by Polaris being held this month, high-performance UTV enthusiasts will be looking for a great rock-crawling and desert tire, and Pro Armor has both environments covered with the Crawler XG, which comes stock on the 2017 Polaris RZR XP 1000 Gold LE rock-crawler edition. The Crawler XG has more tread depth, a higher load rating and less weight than a Maxxis Liberty (tested in October 2016).

FEATURES:

The Crawler XG comes in four sizes—28x10R14, 30x10R14, 32x10R14 and 32x10R15—with a tread depth of 0.78 inch. Large center and side lugs are siped for extra traction, and Crawler XGs are engineered and built to provide unmatched grip on rocks and hard surfaces, but wide spacing between lugs also help self-cleaning in mud. A square-block profile gives a larger contact patch as well, and multiple ruffles/ridges provide extra sidewall traction in softer conditions.

Siped lugs offer more traction-grabbing edges, and stepped side-tread and between-knob ridges increase side bite while also giving more sidewall protection for the eight-ply radial.

CONSTRUCTION:

Armor Belt radial construction with an eight-ply rating, three sidewall belts, and wrap-around lugs for sidewall protection and traction in deep ruts are Crawler XG attributes. The XGs have a 1330–1420-pound load rating, and Crawler XGs weigh 32 to 39 pounds, depending on size. A dual-durometer compound provides extra grip on rocks and a tougher base layer for puncture resistance.

PERFORMANCE:

We did several rock rides at the SxS Adventure Rally, and all trails were rated “difficult.” Pro Armor’s Crawler XG 30x10R14 tires made “difficult” seem more like “moderate.” First, we tackled Plan B with 15-psi front and 16-psi rear pressure, and traction was excellent on the slick-rock and sandstone obstacles. Pro Armor’s website recommends 25 psi, but we went down to 12 psi all around on the XP 1000 Rock Crawler LE and then hit Double Sammy. Traction improved considerably with the lower pressure on rock and desert hardpack. In Sand Hollow State Park’s coarse red sand, the XGs wandered and followed ruts more than the Maxxis Bighorns that come stock on most performance UTVs.

THE VERDICT:

Polaris was smart to shod the RZR XP 1000 Gold LE Rock Crawler Edition with 30x10R14 Crawler XG tires on beadlock rims. They worked so well on trails like Sand Hollow’s the Maze that we grew confident to tackle larger and steeper obstacles, and confidence is almost as important as skill in extreme rock crawling. XGs provide excellent traction on rock and hardpack and have plenty of tread for long tire life. Also, they’re less expensive than BFGoodrich’s Baja KR2 T/As and priced competitively with the Maxxis Liberty and others.
