In the UTV world, the Polaris RZR XP 1000 is a dream machine, one of the elite liter-class vehicles with all the power most drivers can handle and high-end suspension that lets you enjoy the engine to the fullest. Standards are so high among top-of-the-line UTVs that everything is remarkably well done—from the seats to the steering wheel. No matter how great a machine is, there’s always room to improve it, tailor it to one’s personal preference and make it uniquely yours. That’s what Brian Carle set out to do when he got one of the first Polaris RZR XP 1000s in 2014.

WHERE TO START
First-year XP 1000s were remarkable right from the start, but with over 100 horsepower, the 2014s had an appetite for drive belts. Brian handled the problem before Polaris devised the upgraded belt and transmission cooling system that appeared on 2015 XP 1000s. He picked up a Rule 4-inch blower fan online and attached it to the belt housing’s intake tube with two 4- to 3 1/2-inch silicone adapters purchased from SiliconeIntakes.com for $12.99 each. To further bulletproof the system, Brian runs an EPI severe duty belt and a clutch kit from SLP Racing. The EPI belt still looks new after 600 miles of punishment.

Brian fabricated his own swing-away spare carrier to give access to the bed and solved his 2014 XP 1000’s belt cooling issues with his own blower fan and ductwork.

More fuel range means more miles of fun uninterrupted by refueling, so Brian added an IMS 5-gallon auxiliary fuel tank. It connects to the stock tank for a total capacity of 14. 5 gallons. The tank kit relocates the battery, provides power shut-off switches required by most racing organizations and an easily accessible jump-starting point on the side of the engine compartment.

GETTING COMFORTABLE
Suspension on first-year RZR 1000s could smooth whoops with the best, but most drivers were looking for less body roll and more compliance in rocks and small bumps. Brian had Zbroz Racing rework the shocks with new springs and valving, and the results are outstanding. The ride is gloriously plush, with crisp, agile handling and no excess body roll. Big impact control for whoops and jumps is better than the stock suspension too. RZR XP 1000 seats are some of the best stock seats around, but Pro Armor’s F1 seats are so comfortable that you don’t want to get out, even after a full day of riding. Pro Armor’s 4 point padded harnesses keep you comfortable and in place, even in extreme situations. A Pro Armor roof, steering wheel and door bags make the RZR make that much nicer to spend time in. A Rugged Radio car radio kit with an intercom system lets the riders stay in touch with each other and their favorite music. The audio equipment is wired through a Blue Sea Systems marinegrade fuse panel so that the accessories can operate without the key in the ignition.

PROTECTING WHAT’S IMPORTANT
The Pro Armor cage is stronger and lower than stock, and it braces the vehicle’s frame for better handling and less frame fatigue. A-arm guards and trailing arm guards make sure rocks don’t adjust the suspension geometry. A full 1/2-inch-thick ultra-high-molecular weight (UHMW) plastic skid plate and UHMW rock sliders from Factory UTV keep the underside intact.

Brian boosted his machine’s output with Stage 2 Hot Cams, a Starting Line Products exhaust and a Uni air filter. A Dyno Jet Power Commander V tunes the fuel injection to make the most of the mods.

ADDING POWER
The XP 1000 certainly isn’t hurting for power, but more power never hurts. Brian boosted his machine’s output with Stage 2 Hot Cams, a Starting Line Products exhaust and a Uni air filter. A Dyno Jet Power Commander V tunes the fuel injection to make the most of the mods. Hot Cams Stage 2 cams are drop-in replacement parts that use the stock valve springs, but with the other mods, they energize the 1000’s power delivery. The extra midrange and top-end power gives the 1000 serious thrust, even with the added weight of its many accessories.

A PERSONALIZED SPECIAL EDITION
Brian Carle says he enjoyed building his RZR and working with the enthusiasts at aftermarket companies that create the modifications almost as much as driving it. Now that Brian’s XP 1000 has the ride, features and performance he always wanted, he and his wife, Ramona, use it to enjoy the outdoors together. For them, it’s truly the ultimate RZR XP 1000.
