BUYER’S GUIDE: 2016 Extreme-Performance Sport UTVs

The UTV market is growing faster than the Unites States’ national debt, and technological advances are simply astonishing. Arctic Cat increases power in its Wildcat 700s, introduces the Wildcat 1000X Special Edition, and announces partnerships with Robby Gordon, Todd Romano and Speedwerx to produce Speed accessories, including a 1000X supercharger and the new Robby Gordon Speed Edition Wildcat 1000X, 1000X 4 and Sport 700 in limited quantities. Can-Am announces its new 1000cc and 800cc Defender recreation/utility UTVs, turbocharges the base Maverick 1000R, Max 1000R, Maverick X rs and X rs Max, and increases boost for the returning Turbo X ds and Max X ds, plus the four new Turbos. BRP also expands the Commander line with Mossy Oak Hunting Edition 1000 with MOBU Country Camo wrap and expands Octane Blue into Commander territory. Honda introduces its next wave of paddle-shift UTVs with the all-new Pioneer 1000 and Pioneer 1000-5 models with five-speed transmissions, increasing the Pioneer line to five. Kawasaki continues to reinvent the Mule with the Pro-FX joining Pro-FXT, adds a new Ranch Edition FXT, and introduces diesel versions with the new Pro-DXT and Pro-DX in base, EPS and Limited choices. Not to be outdone, Polaris introduces its all-new RZR XP Turbo EPS and XP 4 Turbo EPS, High Lifter Edition RZR XP 4 1000 and Ranger XP 900, the all-new RZR S 1000, Ranger Crew 570-6 and a lithium-ion-powered Ranger EV. We’re sure Polaris isn’t done yet, because Yamaha stunned the world with the revolutionary YXZ1000R, a pure-sport UTV with three-cylinder engine, sequential-shift, five-speed manual transmission and manual hydraulic clutch; think of it as the Raptor 700R of the extreme-performance UTV world! Also, Yamaha introduces the price-point Wolverine 700, Wolverine 700 R-Spec and R-Spec EPS, upgrades the Viking 700 and Viking VI, and introduces the Ranch Edition VI. Check them all out!

The X ds returns with a 3.7-inch-longer WB, longer trailing arms, and Fox Podium X RC2 shocks that deliver 15 inches of front travel and 16 inches out back. POLARIS RZR XP 1000 HIGH LIFTER EPS-LE:
The High Lifter XP1K returns with Ti Matte Metallic paint and red cage, snorkels, bumpers and suspension arms. The 110-hp twin gets mud-specific CVT tuning with lower gearing and larger reverse chain to spin those massive 29.5-inch Outlaw 2 mud tires, and High Lifter’s high-clearance lower A-arms and rear radius rods increase GC to 15 inches. POLARIS RZR S 1000 EPS:
New for 2016, the S 1000, has a 100-hp ProStar twin with the XP1K’s three-duct CVT cover stuffed into the S 900 rolling chassis complete with Fox Podium X 2.0 piggyback shocks and 12.25-inch front travel and 13.2-inch rear travel. POLARIS RZR XP 1000 EPS:
For 2016 XP 1000s get a new seat angle and adjustable seat sliders for a better driving angle and two new color choices. In ’15 the XP1K got a new CVT cover with a third cooling duct directed at the clutch for longer belt life and lower temps. The 110-hp ProStar twin is faster than the new Yamaha, and Walker Evans needle shocks work with three-link trailing arms to deliver 18 inches of rear travel and long A-arms with 16 inches of front-axle travel.

POLARIS RZR XP TURBO EPS:
New for 2016 the XP Turbo makes 144 hp via turbocharged induction and EFI. The 925cc ProStar twin has a 68mm stroke and 9.0:1 compression, plus it has a forced-air CVT cover, high-strength connecting rods, crank, closed-deck cylinders, valves and new oil system. Cooling is upgraded with two radiators with a high-flow fan and electric pump, liquid-charged air cooler, and the driveline is beefed up, including triple-puck front calipers. It’s based on the Fox Edition with Fox IBP shocks and front/rear torsion bars.

The 75-hp ProStar twin and 1,204-pound weight give an industry-leading 6.1 hp per 100 pounds, and the 79-inch WB lets it rip on sand-worm tracks. POLARIS RZR 900 & EPS:
EPS is new to the 50-inch 900 for ’16, and the Camo EPS is only $200 over base MSRP. The 75-hp, 1150-pound 900 makes 6.4 hp per 100 pounds, and goes 0–40 mph in 3.76 seconds. That and front/rear torsion bars lets it snake through the woods with 26-inch PXT tires and ground clearance of 11 inches. JOHN DEERE RSX860I:
John Deere replaces the RSX850i with the RSX860i for 2016, but it’s powered by the same 839cc, 62-hp V-twin and has optional EPS. KAWASAKI TERYX 800FI EPS, CAMO & LE:
The 783cc V-twin has 85mm pistons, 69mm stroke, 10.7:1 compression and two 36mm Mikuni throttle bodies that produce 47 foot-pounds of torque at 5500 rpm. The Teryx uses the same frame as the T-4 but with rear storage bins and side panels instead of seats and doors. A redesigned front styling is more aggressive, and the Fox Podium 2.0 shocks are re-tuned and feature 24-position compression damping adjustment. POLARIS RZR 570 & TRAIL EPS:
The ProStar 567cc EFI single produces 46 hp and goes 0–35 mph in 4 seconds. It has 25 inches Ancla tires, front/rear torsion bars and Sachs ZF HPG shocks with 9-inch front and 9.5-inch rear travel. Only the Trail Edition has engine braking and variable-assist EPS, but both have Polaris On-Demand 4WD system, which stays in 2WD for crisper cornering and handling until the rear wheels break traction, then the front diff engages.
