2018 SPORT UTV BUYER’S GUIDE

— Which one of these exciting models has your name on it? —

What exactly is a sport UTV? To Arctic Cat/Textron and Polaris, it’s a 60-inch-wide UTV, but today’s 50-inch-wide UTVs are very sporty, especially the all-new Maverick Trail 800s and 1000s. Before the Polaris General cross-over UTV (and Gator RSX860i), sport UTVs had a fixed, non-tilting bed that cuts down on utility use. Sport UTVs also have bucket seats instead of benches. Polaris and Can-Am are in a horsepower and suspension-travel war with extreme-performance 1000s and 900–925cc turbos, and width has grown to 72 inches on the 174-horsepower Maverick X3 X rs. Can-Am also introduces two new Rock Crawler editions for 2018, while Polaris unleashes two- and four-seat RZR XP Turbos with Dynamix smart suspension for on-the-fly shock adjustment and a better ride. Yamaha introduces the Wolverine X4, Yamaha’s first UTV with a inline twin engine and convertible rear seats. Textron goes after the General 1000 with its 100-horsepower Havoc X cross-over UTV, and we’re waiting for the drop of the Wildcat XX and at least one new Polaris later this year. Until then, here are the top 50 sport 4×4 UTVs, whether they have seating for one, two or four.

Also of note: 19 models of UTVs were dropped for 2017, and only nine were discontinued for 2018, so we’re stoked with the uptick in innovation as well as sales.

SINGLE-SEAT UTVs

POLARIS ACE XC 900 EPS:

The Ace Cross-Country 900 replaced the 2016 SP 900 and got 18 more horsepower than the SP for a total of 78. Walker Evans needle shocks and long A-arms provide 12.3 inches of front and 12.6 inches of rear travel, and A-arm geometry stretches the wheelbase to 67.5 inches and width to 59 inches. Tires are GNCC-ready 27-inch GBC Dirt Commanders.

Polaris wedged the 45-horsepower ProStar 570 EFI single-cylinder engine into the original Ace frame to produce the Ace 570, which shares the drive-line, brakes, cage, cabin, seat and plastic with the original Ace. The Ace 500 sports a high-torque ProStar 500cc EFI single with 32 horsepower for $500 less than the old 325. MacPherson struts have 8.2 inches of front-wheel travel, and rolled IRS dual-A-arm rear suspension yields 9.5 inches. Wheelbase is 61.5 inches, and all Aces sport a dash with more storage and larger cockpit with more legroom.
