HONDA PIONEER 700/DELUXE

The Pioneer 700 is a two-seat, midsize recreation utility machine powered by a 675cc, four-valve single-cylinder engine with a three-speed automatic transmission. This machine’s compact 59.7-inchwidth and tight turning radius make it easy to maneuver on tight trails and in confined areas. The 700 delivers a remarkably smooth ride, even on bumpy, rocky trails, as long as you don’t push the machine too hard. Get too aggressive and you’ll feel the front end bottom on big impacts. For normal trail riding and exploring, the suspension is fine. A 450-watt alternator provides plenty of accessory power.

The Pioneer 700’s geared, automotive style automatic transmission doesn’t use a drive belt and also offers manual shifting with automotive style paddle shifters on Deluxe models. Three drive modes include 2WD, 4WD and 4WD with Differential lock. The transmission also provides predictable engine braking to all four wheels when in four wheel drive.

The Pioneer 700 comes in base and Deluxe models with prices starting at $10,999. The latter features painted bodywork, aluminum wheels, Electric Power Steering (EPS) and color-matched suspension springs. All models feature lift-assist tilting cargo beds that can carry 1000 pounds. The Pioneer 700 can tow 1500 pounds.

HONDA PIONEER 520

The 2021 Honda Pioneer 520 is a new version of the Pioneer 500 with a larger, 518cc engine, 43cc larger than the 500’s, and a tilting bed that can carry 450 pounds of cargo. This machine seats two and is 50 inches wide, so it’s perfect for width-restricted trails and confined work areas. It also fits easily in the bed of a full-sized pickup. Full of fuel, the Pioneer 500 weighs only 1065 pounds, so it has an outstandingly light, agile feel. The Pioneer 520 has a beltless, five-speed automatic transmission that can also be shifted manually with car-type paddle shifters. The transmission also provides predictable engine braking to all four wheels when in four-wheel drive.

This recreation utility UTV can tow 1000 pounds from its receiver-type hitch. Independent front and rear suspension with dual-rate springs and adjustable spring preload provides a comfortable, well-controlled ride. KAWASAKI MULE PRO-FXR EPS

The Kawasaki Mule Pro-FXR is the sportiest of the Pro-series Mule utility-recreation family. It seats three adults comfortably and is shorter and lighter than the Pro-FX and Pro-FXT. It’s powered by the same smooth, quiet, 812cc, three-cylinder engine as the larger models, making the Pro-FXR quicker and more agile while still providing impressive work capabilities like a tilting cargo bed with a durable steel floor that can carry 1000 pounds. The Pro-FXR can tow 2000 pounds from its receiver-type hitch.

The Pro-FXR features full doors and a large 13-gallon storage bin with a waterproof lid under the contoured seat for storing gear, tools and supplies. The high-output 75-amp generator supports two dashboard integrated DC sockets to power accessory items or personal devices.

It comes with all the extras you get on high-end Mule Pro EPS LE models, including power steering, painted bodywork, contoured bench seats, aluminum wheels, dual-mode rear differential and a roof, plus rugged steel front and rear bumpers. A service panel lets you get to the oil dipstick, air filter and battery without tilting the bed.

KAWASAKI MULE PRO-FX/EPS/EPS LE/DIESEL

Three-seat Mule Pro-FX’s are powered by an extremely smooth, quiet, refined, 812cc, three-cylinder, 12-valve, double-overhead-cam engine or a torquey, fuel-efficient, 993cc three-cylinder diesel. The Pro-FX is all about low-end power, which makes steep terrain simple to conquer. This machine’s clutching and power delivery are tuned for smoothness, so you don’t have to be a master of throttle control to maintain traction on slippery trails. The Pro-FX’s steadiness also helps keep passengers calm and cargo in place when the trail gets ugly.

The drive system feature selectable 2WD/4WD with a lockable rear differential. The rear differential unlocks to make tight turns easier and to protect delicate turf. There’s no front differential-lock feature, but the Pro-FX can go anywhere a utility UTV should need to go.

Pro-FX models feature a huge 54.1 by 53.3-inch tilting cargo bed with a durable steel floor that can hold a standard-size pallet and carry 1000 pounds. These machines can also tow a ton from the receiver type hitches. The Pro-FX LE comes with painted bodywork, power steering, roof, aluminum wheels, and halogen and LED headlights.

KAWASAKI MULE PRO-MX EPS/LE/CAMO

The mid-size Kawasaki Mule Pro-MX is smaller and narrower (60 versus 64 inches wide) than full-size Pro-series Mules, with seating for two rather than three or six. Its work capabilities rival many larger machines, with a cargo bed that can carry 700 pounds, and the ability to tow 1500 pounds. The cab floor and cargo bed floor are steel.

The Pro-MX is powered by a single-cylinder, 695cc, single-overhead-cam, four-valve engine. Vibration-reducing mounts and a well-silenced intake make the single nearly as smooth as the 812cc, three-cylinder engine in the larger Mule Pro models. Its fully automatic, dual-range continuously variable transmission includes automatic engine braking that acts on all four wheels when in four wheel drive.

Double-A-arm front and rear suspension with spring preload-adjustable shocks offer 8.6 inches of front suspension travel and 9.1 inches in the rear. The Mule Pro-MX LE comes with a roof, aluminum wheels and Firecracker Red or Super Black bodywork. The base model has steel wheels and Timberline Green bodywork. All Mule Pro-MX models have power steering, a tilt wheel and LED/halogen headlights.

KAWASAKI TERYX/CAMO/LE

The two-seat 2021 Kawasaki Teryx/Camo/LE models have large storage bins behind the seats and a tilting cargo bed. The Teryx is powered by a 783cc V-twin that produces strong, sporty response  for its size, and it’s very controllable thanks to Kawasaki’s automatic transmission, which features a belt-protecting centrifugal clutch on the primary clutch that also provides predictable four wheel engine braking in 4WD.

Double-A-arm front and rear suspension with 8 inches of travel up front and 8.3 inches in the rear handles the bumps. Compression and spring preload adjustable Fox 2.0 piggyback reservoir shocks are used front and rear. The Teryx is nimble on tight trails and great on mountain switchbacks.

The Teryx is available in base, camo and LE models. All models have power steering. LE models come with painted bodywork, 14-inch aluminum wheels with 27-inch tires, and a roof. POLARIS RANGER 1000/EPS/PREMIUM

The Polaris Ranger 1000 is powered by a 999cc, single-overhead-cam, two-valve-per-cylinder inline twin with 61 horsepower and 55 pound-feet of torque. With peak torque 3000 rpm lower than the Ranger XP 900 it replaced, the 1000 pulls hard without revving hard, which makes it feel more smooth and relaxed at the engine speeds recreation utility UTV drivers use more often. The transmission’s clutching provides precise throttle response and very smooth engagement right off idle, just what you want on challenging trails and in precise maneuvers when doing chores. The Ranger 1000 is all about smooth, strong power, not winning drag races. If you need a recreation utility machine with more top end thrust, there’s the 82-horsepower Ranger XP 1000. For 2021, Ranger XP 1000s feature a stronger front drive and more durable suspension components.

The base Ranger 1000 has steel wheels, unpainted bodywork and no power steering. The Ranger 1000 EPS is $13,999 and has power steering, steel wheels and unpainted bodywork. The Ranger 1000 EPS Premium is $14,999 and comes with power steering, painted bodywork, a steel front bumper, an adjustable driver’s seat and cast-aluminum wheels.
