2024 POLARIS RANGER XD 1500 SPECS, COLORS & PRICES

 

Polaris just announced the largest utility side by side not only in their line up, but in the industry. The Ranger XD 1500 features a Polaris built ProStar, 1500cc, triple cylinder, gas powered engine. It puts out a respectable 110 Horsepower and 105 lb ft of torque. Those power numbers are over a 30% percent increase over previous Ranger 1000 models. 

However, what Polaris hopes will make this machine a true workhorse is its brand new SteelDrive CVT transmission. Yes, you read that right, Polaris is borrowing the same technology that has been used in many compact automobiles for the last decade, and installing it into the latest Ranger. Not only is Polaris after the pulling power of a steel CVT belt, they want durability and a long service life. According to Polaris, this transmission only requires a simple oil and filter change every 6000 miles. Furthermore, the new 1500cc, 3 cylinder engine can go 2000-miles between oil changes under normal usage. 

Will it work? Well, we have driven a bunch of rental cars with this transmission and have never been pleased with their performance. Perhaps in an off-road, work setting they might be different. However, it appears there is no low range setting or sub transmission to keep the belt from being abused all day long under extreme loads. Plus the new, three cylinder engine only puts out 110 horsepower but the Ranger weighs 2500-3500 pounds. However some car CVT’s have a launch gear which is used for takeoff. This could be what Polaris uses as Tow/Haul Mode. We can hope this is the case.  So, like with any new machine, we have our reservations about them until we spend time seeing if they prove worthy. So, only time will tell if its worth the $30,000-$50,000 price tag.
