5 UTV’s AT KOH THAT AREN’T WHAT THEY SEEM

One of the great things about the Can-Am Hammers Championship or “King Of The Hammers” is that you don’t have do build a high dollar, one off car to compete in. However, that doesn’t stop some teams from doing so. Go through the line up of machines at this years race and there will be several that stand out, here are five of them.

RJ Anderson typically runs a fairly stock RZR when he does compete. This year, Anderson will compete in a purpose built, NOS, Polaris RZR Pro R rock racer fabricated in his own shop. RJ has a unique body setup. There is no hood only fenders, so RJ can see where to point his tires.  He’s going after the UTV Open crown at KOH. He qualified 21st. See the complete qualifying results here.

Ross Pilgreen makes the pilgramage to KOH every year all the way from Little Rock Arkansas. This years weapon of choice is another RZR. Like RJ’s, his custom chassis is built to clear and/ or slide over rocks with ease. See our article on Ross’ previous Turbo RZR build here.

Tyler Thomas  is campaigning an Avid UTV Yamaha YXZ1000 with a RMAX front hood and diff. The 5 speed manual transmission has been geared down by using a Crawl Box system. Short Course heavy hitter, Rodney VanEperen will be in a second team car for Avid Yamaha. Read about the Crawl Box at www.utvactionmag.com/crawl-force-yxz1000r-crawl-box/ .

Travis Zollinger is again competing in his custom single seat Can-Am Maverick X3 . The narrowed up chassis should be able to snake through the rocks and its long wheelbase will fly over the bumps in the desert sections. Travis’s Zollinger Racing Products  will be all over this car keeping it together in the toughest one day race in the United States.

Josh Smith, like many drivers, made the switch from Polaris to a Can-Am Maverick X3 for 2023. His new ride has ZRP’s billet aluminum upper A-arms, trailing arms, knuckles and KMC forged wheels . Smith will be competing in the UTV (Pro Mod) and 4400 unlimited races along with the Miller Brothers and Kyle Chaney.  See the complete race schedule here
