America’s only remaining three day beach race!

How many people get to race their UTV, ATV or dirt bike around a lake on state park land, camp with family, trick-or-treat with the kids and carve pumpkins over Halloween weekend? Castaic, California, was the place to be on Halloween for family fun, and the Grand Prix racecourse was one of the best ever. The Moto XXX Race Around the Lake presented by Jet World was sponsored by O’Neal Racing, Maxima, N-Style, Jet World, Pit Pro, Motowhips!, Sayiwont, RePlay, Lucky Rentals, Rhino Liner Simi Valley, Garrett Trailers, Black Flag, Hitch Hotel, PDA Beef Jerky and EBE, and Vendor Row was jamming with DJ Greg from LACR fame. Dirt Works’ Brian Staben laid out a great 2.5-mile course with a little bit of everything thrown in, including a sweet motocross section with tabletops, doubles, big berms and a step-up. Two tunnels connected the MX section to the fast Grasshopper Canyon GP section and the woods section. From there, the RATL course used the Castaic Lake State Recreation Area’s parking lots, sidewalks, grass and beach sections before returning to the start line and MX course.

Bill Markel led the Vet ATV 45-minute race from flag to flag. Moto Works smoothed the course each day and kept dust to a minimum with between-race passes.

It was three days of UTV, quad and dirt bike racing, and there were classes for everyone. Each day ended with at least one team race for extra competition, bench racing and camaraderie. The pumpkin-carving contest and trickor-treating amongst the motor homes were a fun end to Saturday’s family activities, and the big team race on Sunday awarded the rodeo-style belt buckle commemorating Tyler Hoeft. Fittingly, the team race was won by UTV Action test riders Darrin and Justin Hoeft, Tyler’s dad and brother. In all, 21 races went off during the three-day GP, with sweet laser-etched trophies awarded afterwards. Be sure to check out a future issue of UTV Action for 2016 RATL race dates.

Not your average walk in the park, the course drops off of sidewalks and onto the lagoon before hitting the beach.

We love the sound of angry tires in the morning—and the smell of victory. Drifting a UTV on smooth cement is a thrill.

What kind of tire should you use when the RATL course includes pavement, concrete, loam, hardpack, mud and beach sand? Adam Mello went with Mongrels on beadlock rims, which worked well everywhere but on the beach.

Smooth concrete sidewalks made for great fun drifting and drafting on fourwheelers, and they were a welcome rest from the rougher MX, GP, woods and beach sections.
