DUNETECH OFF-ROAD RZR XP 4 TEST

— A special look for a custom performance UTV build —

Cesar Ramos of Graham, Washington, won the UTV Takeover Show-n-Shine with this Dunetech Off-Road (DTO) 2015 RZR XP 4 1000, and we got a chance to check it out in the Oregon dunes.

Cesar Ramos had Kalani Corn of Dunetech Off-Road build this sweet Dos Equis RZR XP 4 1000, which won the Show-n-Shine at the Oregon UTV Takeover. A Bully Dog Tuner and Boondocker clutch put power to GMZ sand tires.

Kanali Corn of DTO did the XP 4 build, starting with NXS Designs’ chromoly long-travel suspension kit. NXS’ LTS kit is built to be extremely strong and light, with the chromoly A-arms and trailing arms adding 3.5 inches per side and 3.0 inches more wheelbase. The $3950 kit includes front upper and lower A-arms, high-clearance trailing arms, radius rods, tie-rods, 300M axles and all hardware needed for installation. The kit also includes spherical heim ball joints with titanium stems and chromoly cages, so owners can adjust camber. NXS also offers this kit in titanium for $7499.

Extreme Performance’s door frames and cage tubes are chromoly, and Twisted Stitch was called on for the Big Boy ostrich-skin front bucket and rear bench seat. Dual Rugged Radios VSC Pumpers supply clean, cool air to four occupants.

JRi ECX3 shocks went on next, with the four 2.5-inch piggyback shocks going for $4400. ECX3s have high- and low-speed compression and rebound adjusters, plus Bottom-Out Control, and the XP 1000 version sports a 7/8-inch shaft for durability. The NXS LTS kit and JRi shocks work great with the Hiper wheels and GMZ sand tires. Other performance mods include a Bullydog tuner and Boondocker CVT clutch.

An Assault quick-connect steering wheel prevents drive-off theft, and communications are handled by Rugged Radios. Rugged also supplied the mount for the Lowrance Elite 5M GPS. Mob Armor securely holds Ramos’ smartphone.

DUNE COMFORT, DTO STYLE

Corn called on Extreme Performance for the XP 4’s cage; Extreme’s Desert Style cage is completely constructed of 4130 chromoly ,1 5/8-inch diameter tubing with 0.83-inch walls. It’s Tig-welded with an integrated V-brace intrusion bar, light-bar tabs, A-pillar gussets, rear bed braces, and dual whip mounts for $3150 (raw and powdercoating are $350–$400). Extreme Performance’s XP 4 door kit also uses 4130 chromoly frames and sells for $1960.

NXS’ long-travel arms have adjustable camber, and DTO powdercoated the suspension arms, axles, nerf bars, bumper and torsion bar to match the classic Dos Equis wrap. DTO did the custom skid plate and Warn ProVantage winch mounting.
NXS Designs’ chromoly long-travel kit adds travel, width and wheelbase, and the JRi ECX3 shocks add plush ride quality to the DTO XX XP 4. Shocks have a 7/8-inch shaft and 2.5-inch body and piggyback reservoir.

Twisted Stitch supplied the two front- and rear-bench ($899.95) Big Boy Vortex seats in Black Ostrich with red accents ($949.95 a pair) and five-point harnesses ($119.95 each). Corn added a child seat and harness as well. Rugged Radios supplied the VSC (variable speed control) Dual Pumpers and Pyrotech helmet, four Ultimate headsets, 660 intercom and Vertex VX2200 radio. A Lowrance Elite 5M GPS rides on a Rugged mount above the Mod Quad RZR T-Bar with grips, and ABF switches and dash inserts control the electronics, Warn ProVantage 3500-S winch, and Heretic LED headlights, grill light and light bar. Assault’s quick-connect steering wheel, gas cap, and shifter add style and comfort.

NXS Designs’ high-clearance trailing arms are lighter than stock, and the kit’s 300M axles and links were powdercoated to match the Chaos MX wrap. Boondocker keeps the sand tires spinning.

DUNE ARMOR

Dunetech’s nerf bars are only $149 a pair, and they were powdercoated red to match the lower front A-arms, while the cage, door frames, trailing arms and upper A-arms were coated gold to match the Dos Equis-themed wrap by Chaos MX Graphics. Whip-It LED whips were joined in back by Warn LED work lights, a Safecraft fire extinguisher, and Swag Rubbermaid Action Packer storage box with aluminum tie-down points. Corn also fabricated the skidplates and front bumper at DTO. We had a blast in the Dos Equis DTO XP 4, and the ride over dune chop was excellent with the NXS long-travel kit and JRi ECX3 shocks.
