In our July 2019 issue ( we started driving a well-equipped Maverick Sport 1000R featuring a full compliment of Can-Am’s own PAC Accessories. It was the ultimate Can-Am showroom Maverick Sport build.

From the front bumper to the rear spare-tire carrier and everything in between, it was more trail-ready and meaner-looking. Additionally, the cockpit was outfitted with seats, and the cargo area featured a great, small accessory cooler that has come in very handy.

Can-Am’s Maverick sport has the features of a high-performance UTV but the agility of a trail car. It’s been our go-to when we want to explore any new trail.


We liked the versatility and how easy it was to transport the little Maverick, so much that we ended up driving it more than any other UTV last summer. Unfortunately, that took its toll on the stock Maxxis Big Horn tires. It seemed that on every ride we had to remember to bring the air compressor. We got a lot of practice plugging tires on the trail. So, to combat this, we ordered up a set of ITP Ultra Cross R-Spec tires. The R-Spec is one of our favorite tires for our brutal, rocky, West Coast terrain. We opted for a slightly larger tire than stock to add ground clearance and bump absorption. For further protection, those meats were mounted on a set of ITP’s SD single beadlock wheels. We went with 28×10-14 sizing on all four corners. This package is about 15 pounds heavier on each corner. While it mellows out power and acceleration slightly, the added durability is well worth it for the general trail riding we do with this rig. If you are looking for a little less rubber or weight, ITP’s new Terra Hook would also be a great choice for a small car like this.

The number-one improvement we have made to this Maverick Sport are the shocks. The car is still plush at slow speeds like before, but now can soak up the hard hits, too. The fully adjustable Elkas can easily be tuned for any trail or even the track.


Another component of the Maverick Sport that quickly wore out was the shocks. While they are plush and work well over small bumps and chop, they quickly bottom out going over square edges, and the rears buck pretty badly in the whoops.

Since everything else on the machine is top-notch, we chose to install Elka’s top-of-the line shocks to match. The Stage 5 Elkas have preload, high-/low-speed compression and rebound adjustments. The stock shocks only had preload adjusters. Elka uses 15mm shock shafts with piggyback reservoirs front and rear. The combo holds the most oil you can get in a smaller shock and still allows for dual-rate springs in the back and a single spring up front.

Can-Am’s PAC accessory catalog is full of parts to outfit any UTV model. The light bar, cooler, roof, shocks and tires have turned this little Maverick into the favorite car in our stable.


It’s not that we didn’t love the ride that the stock Maverick offered. We think the added weight of the PAC accessories taxed the tires and pushed the limits of the shocks quickly. Of course, we admit we beat the heck out of it in the rough California desert.

Initially, our upgrades made slow- to medium-speed trail riding super plush. As with the stock setup, the car floated over some of the smaller chop and little bumps. But, when we started pushing it over the same obstacles that gave us fits before, we were amazed. With the combination of a thicker, taller tire and shocks that never seemed to bottom, we could hammer just about any bump within reason. The little car thinks it’s an X3 now and likes to skip over whoops. Sure, huge ditches and steep ramps can’t be hit at speed, but the car works just as well hammering through the rough now as it does cruising over the smaller stuff.

We noted in our first feature on this car that the Beard seats provide an extra inch of cushion right where it counts.


For a smaller car, the Beard seats keep you from feeling cramped, and the shocks add to the comfort. They deflect sharp rocks and have held up to our abuse quite well. So, from head to tail, the little Maverick Sport is mightier than its name and continues to be one of our go-to machines when we want a worry-free ride full of excitement in the wide open and a tight, trail-capable machine. ITP’s Terra Cross is the tire we pick when we want known durability and traction for all surfaces. Although we have a spare for peace of mind, we probably won’t need it. One thing to note: the LSR spare-tire carrier won’t accept this larger 28-inch-tall tire full of air. So, we mounted it flat, but always carry a compressor in the event we need to use it.
