CAN-AM RANCH HEAVY DUTY JACKET

WHAT IT IS:

Can-Am Accessories’ Ranch Heavy Duty jacket is made from stain- and water-resistant heavy-duty cotton canvas. It’s lined and insulated, so it’s ideal for cool-weather wear. Rear armhole gussets give the wearer extra mobility. The extra-long sleeves and back provide comfort and coverage when driving UTVs and riding ATVs. Two outer cargo pockets have hand-warmer pockets behind them. There’s also an external chest pocket and an inside chest pocket. Can-Am lists the color as brown, but we’d call it dark tan or dark khaki. The Can-Am Ranch Heavy Duty jacket is $130. It’s similar to Carhartt’s $139 Chore coat, though the Chore coat isn’t treated to be water- or stain-resistant, and its front pockets don’t have flaps or hand-warmer pockets behind the outer pockets.

PERFORMANCE:

Wind chill can make you feel like you’re freezing on UTV rides in weather that’s even slightly cold, so we tried Can-Am’s Ranch Heavy Duty jacket in a variety of conditions to see how it performed. Light rain was falling the first time we wore the jacket, and the water-repellent canvas shed water like a hot frying pan. Very impressive, though the jacket isn’t truly waterproof. The canvas outer shell stops wind well and is sturdy enough to handle hikes through brush, but the jacket is softer than enduro jackets, which can be uncomfortably stiff for driving UTVs. The corduroy-lined collar is warm and comfortable and has no Velcro tabs to stick to helmets. The lined, insulated interior is warm enough for cold-weather riding, but another warm layer would be wise for harsh winter conditions.

THE VERDICT:

Can-Am’s Ranch Heavy Duty jacket handles harsh riding conditions comfortably and serves well as work wear or a hunting coat. It’s also good-looking enough to wear when you’re back in civilization.
