CAN-AM X3 XRC TURBO RR

CAN-AM X3 XRC TURBO RR

Can-Am’s Maverick X3 Turbo Rock Crawler lineup again offers a 64-inch, 120-horsepower Turbo and the 72-inch, 195-horsepower Can-Am X3 Xrc Turbo RR for 2021. No other manufacturer offers a rock-specific Turbo UTV, and the Can-Am X3 Xrc Turbo RR comes standard with 32-inch Maxxis Liberty 2.0 tires on 15-inch beadlock aluminum wheels, a 4500-pound winch, aluminum roof, half-doors, a front bumper, tow hooks, HMWPE skid plates, suspension guards and rock sliders, four-point harnesses, and Smart-Lok front diff. We tested the original rc Turbo RR in the April 2020 issue and the 2021 Maverick Sport 1000R X rc in March.

The Can-Am X3 Xrc Turbo RR returns for 2021 in Chalk Grey and Magma Red. The Rock Crawler and Mud Racer editions are the two best-equipped Turbo RRs.

WHAT’S NEW FOR 2021?

Turbo RRs got a bigger turbocharger, new pistons, a less-restrictive intake, and a bigger intercooler to produce 195 horsepower for 2020; 2021 models also get larger CVT cooling ducts. The RC’s Smart-Lok front diff with Front Differential Module monitors six parameters–speed of both front wheels, steering angle, throttle position, gear selection, engine torque and vehicle speed–to automatically select the amount of diff-lock to apply. This allows low steering effort while maintaining maximum traction.

Smart-Lok has two toggles on the dash to select from four drive modes—2×4, 4×4 fully locked, 4×4 Trail Active (rock) and 4×4 Trail—for more versatility and feel to match specific terrain, conditions and demands.

To complement the Smart-Lok front end, X3 x RC Turbo RRs get UHMW rock sliders, suspension arm protection and front-diff guards, a 4,500-pound winch and orange frame, and cage and suspension components. The X3 X rc also gets the X rs Fox Podium 2.5 front and 3.0 rear RC2 Internal ByPass (IBP) shocks with dual-rate springs and adjustable crossovers, dual-speed compression, rebound and preload. The rock-specific Maxxis Liberty 2.0 tires grew to 32x10R15 on beadlock wheels for 2020; 2019s had 30x10R14s. Chalk Gray and Magma Red are the new RC colors for 2021.

HOW DOES COST COMPARE?

The 2021 Maverick X3 X rc Turbo RR is $29,799, $200 more than in 2020. Maverick X3 X rc Turbos are $24,099, while X3 X rs Turbo Rs start at $22,499, and the X3 X rs Turbo RR is $27,599 or $29,299 with Smart-Shox. Polaris’ 2021 RZR XP Turbo is $19,999 ($1,000 less than 2020). The XP Turbo S is $22,499, and the Turbo S Velocity is $28,199. The 64-inch Turbo Pro XP is $22,999. The Premium Pro XP is $26,499, and the Pro XP Ultimate is $28,499. Polaris has no designated RC Turbo, just the RZR XP1000 Rocks & Trails Edition, which is $23,599.

CAN-AM X3 XRC TURBO RR
The 195-horsepower, 900cc triple is paired with Can-Am’s Quick Response System X CVT, three 74mm pistons ride on a 67.9mm stroke and compression is 9.1:1. A 46mm EFI throttle body feeds the Rotax Ace triple with intelligent throttle control fly-by-wire.

HOW FAST IS THE X3 X RC?

It’s super fast! The 900cc triple easily reaches 80 mph in High, and 100-plus mph is possible with simple ECU/CVT tuning. It’s home at speed in the desert and dunes, but it will also happily crawl at a walking pace in Low. This 195-horsepower beast will pin you to the Ergo-Lok seats with serious acceleration, but it’s not quite as quick as the X rs Turbo RR because it has taller and heavier tires and weighs 184 pounds more.

CAN-AM X3 XRC TURBO RR
All X3s get new larger CVT ducts for cooler-running belts, and the RC Turbo RR is the only 2021 X3 to get 32-inch tires on 15-inch beadlock aluminum rims. The RC Turbo RR and RC Turbo are also the only X3s to get front-width rear tires and wheels.

WHAT ABOUT THE DELIVERY?

It’s high-tech and top-shelf. There’s no turbo lag when you want hard acceleration, but it engages smoothly and positively when you’re in delicate situations. The throttle and clutch maps are well matched. Servos quickly engage Smart-Lok modes and tune EPS assist for optimum traction with minimal steering input. The rc Turbo RR is as sure-footed as a production UTV gets in rocks, and it also rocks in big dunes.

CAN-AM X3 XRC TURBO RR
Rear travel is 24 inches with Fox Podium 3.0 RC2 remote-reservoir IBP shocks, and the X rc has high-clearance lower radius rods and front-width 32x10R15 Maxxis Liberty tires on aluminum beadlock rims for crisper handling.

HOW DOES THE X RC TURBO RR HANDLE?

Like it’s wired into the driver’s brainstem. With a long 102-inch wheelbase, the X3 is super stable at higher speeds, and yet it’s agile on tighter trails. With a 72.8-inch width, it’s a blast to slam into turns, and the narrow rear tires help it rotate and power-slide out. The 32-inch Maxxis Liberty 2.0 tires add to overall handling and ride comfort, and traction on rocks is incredible. The rc Turbo RR is a blast in the dunes and desert, too.

CAN-AM X3 XRC TURBO RR
Both Ergo-Lok seats have fore/aft adjusters and can be adjusted for height with tools. We really like the retracting four-point harnesses with plenty of padding.

HOW IS THE HIGH-END SUSPENSION?

Class-leading and very tunable. The Fox RC2 Podium IBP 2.5 front and 3.0 rear shocks are well-tuned and deliver a great ride over a wide variety of conditions and obstacles. With 22 inches of front travel and 24 inches in back, 72-inch Turbo RRs lead the class in usable suspension. Only the 2021 X3 X rs with Smart-Shox is more sophisticated, and the RC2s have adjustable high- and low-speed compression plus rebound and crossover height. Fox Race Tune recommendations are two turns on Low-Speed Compression (LSC) and three turns out on High-Speed Compression (HSC), front and rear. Front and rear sway bars fight body roll but still articulate for rock crawling.

Width is 72.8 inches. Ground clearance is 16 inches, and front travel is 22 inches. The Rock Crawler has HMWPE skid plates, suspension guards and rock sliders, plus a 4500-pound winch with synthetic rope.

HOW STRONG ARE THE BRAKES?

Strong as granite. Can-Am X3s sport separate front and rear hydraulic braking systems and use two-piston calipers on all four corners with 262mm front and 248mm rear rotors.

HOW IS IT IN DESERT AND DUNES?

Awesome. The RC Turbo RR soaks up desert whoops, dune jumps and G-outs at insane speeds. Larger 32-inch Maxxis Liberty tires add ride comfort, ground clearance and traction in fast desert terrain, and the tires are decent in dune sand when aired down. The Turbo RR has excellent high-speed stability, and the Fox RC2 Internal ByPass shocks bleed off impacts from rocks and square edges well.

All four wheels have twin-piston hydraulic calipers, and the Can-Am has separate front- and rear-brake master cylinders. Front ventilated rotors are 262mm, while rears are 248mm.

HOW IS IT IN ROCKS AND MUD?

Sure-footed. The rc Turbo RR sticks to slick rock like it has magnetic tires. It has 195 horsepower for conquering the eastern limestone ledges encountered in Southern Rock Racing, and the 32-inch tires add traction, ground clearance and ride quality. Mud riders will likely go to taller mud tires, and the Turbo RR has the power to turn them with ease. Mudders will also want fender extensions to keep mud out of the cabin, but the RC’s lower doors do keep most mud out. We have had mud fowl the X3 seat sliders, though.

We tested the Rock Crawler at Utah’s Sand Hollow State Park, so we could let the Turbo RR stretch its legs and carve red sand dunes. Our test unit also sports Can-Am’s accessory Baja Designs 40-inch LED light bar ($1,754.99).

WHAT ABOUT TRAIL COMFORT?

It’s as good as it gets. Ergo-Lok seats provide a comfortable position that can be tuned with tools, and the retracting harnesses are very secure and comfortable. An aluminum roof, lower doors and intrusion bars provide extra protection, and vibration and cabin noise are minimal. Both two-tone seats are adjustable and ride on tubular sliders. EPS assist is awesome, and all controls are slick and well-placed. Four-way controls quickly dial Smart-Lok drive mode and instrument readout. The high-end Fox IBP shocks can be adjusted for all-out performance or maximum ride quality, and the 32-inch tires can be aired down for a plusher ride.

WHAT’S OUR FINAL ANSWER?

While we’d like to see a Smart-Shox option for the Maverick X3 X rc Turbo RR, this is the best-equipped X3 for 2021. The Turbo RR rock crawler comes fully armored with a roof, doors, HMWPE sliders, skids and guards, intrusion bars, a mirror, 32s on beadlocks and a 4500-pound winch, all for $500 more than the X rs Smart-Shox. While the RC Turbo RR doesn’t have on-the-fly shock adjustment, its RC2 IBP Podiums are highly tunable for any condition. It does everything very well, whether you’re exploring triple-black-diamond rock trails, ripping in the dunes, or attacking high-speed desert.
