UTV TAKEOVER IN OREGON

— Tons of fun for everyone —

With attendance exceeding 10,000 people, the UTV Takeover put on three events in 2018, and we attended the first jamboree held at the south end of the Oregon Dunes National Recreation Area. Headquartered at Box Car Hill Campground at Coos Bay, the Oregon UTV Takeover had four days and nights of fun and free activities for UTVs, ATVs, families and children. Polaris put on demo rides with RZR Turbos, RS1s and 1000s, and sponsored the main stage, along with Florence Yamaha, while Rugged Radios sponsored daily youth ATV hands-on training. The Salem Sand Club sponsored group dune rides by day, and Whip It Light Rods put on night rides. Bombshell Gear sponsored the UTV drag races, while DCP presented the ATV sand drags. There were also UTV and ATV barrel races and short-course events, and Humboldt Motorsports presented the UTV Huckfest jump contest and sponsored the main tent, the site of the BBQ spare ribs contest and pot-luck dinner.

Cole Freiday dominated the Oregon UTV Takeover premiere event, UTV Huckfest, in his Evolution Powersports Geiser Maverick X3 with a 132-foot jump. He went further than the winning dirt bike!
Oregon is the home of RP Advanced Mobil Systems, which converts UTVs for military use. Bombshell Gear was a vendor and sponsor at the Takeover. See www.bombshellgear.com for XP and X3 MOLLE-modular door bag platforms and more.
Polaris was camped on the edge of Vendor Row and held daily demo rides with RZR RS1s, XP Turbo S’ and more.

Rockford Fosgate sponsored the dirt bike and ATV Huckfest, but the bikes and ATVs didn’t go nearly as big as the UTVs did. There were also day and night Show & Shine contests, daily swag raffles, a non-stop Kids’ Zone, nightly live music sponsored by PCI Radios, and an ATC 70 Olympics. More family fun included a treasure hunt, farmer’s dash, group campfire with rock-and-roll bingo, wheelie contests, UTV and Jeep dune tours, sand-tire toss, and one-off events like the Blind Bandit and Lampoon Dune Vacation. Vendor Row was sponsored by Monster Energy, and vendors contributed $20,000 in product swag for raffles. Competition winners won extra raffle tickets, which were only $1 apiece.

Friday’s big raffle was held after the BBQ spare-rib cook-off championships and pot-luck dinner at the event’s main tent and stage. Raffles were held every night but Thursday.
Cesar Ramos won the Show & Shine with his RZR XP 4 1000 built by Kalani Corn’s Dune Tech Off-Road. Look in the November 2018 issue of UTV Action magazine for a feature on the wild build. Corn and his son also cleaned up in the 70 Olympics and ATV short-course racing and were second in ATV Huckfest and ATV barrel racing.

After four days and nights of free fun and camping in the dunes, MDT Discount Tires sponsored the Sunday Air Station, where several bulldozers pulled campers out of the loose dune sand. We’ll also be reporting on the Idaho UTV Takeover (August 8–12) in an upcoming issue and hope to make the Little Sahara UTV Takeover as well (October 3–7).

On the first day of the Takeover, Metal Havoc and Sand Craft sponsored the UTV wheelie contest held at Huck Hill. After that, Whip-It Light Rods put on a night ride in the Oregon Dunes.
After a couple of days of tuning, Saturday was the big day for the SxS Wars sand drags, presented by Bombshell Gear. Andy Malone (near lane) won the drags in his PWR Tune.com X3. UTVs also competed in sand short-course races on Friday and Saturday and UTV Barrel Racing on Friday.
What do you do when you run out of spare CVT belts? Thursday’s 70 Olympics were sponsored by Vision Diesel Performance.
