RALLY ON THE ROCKS UTV JAM

— Awesome riding at Moab, Utah —

It took millions of years to form Utah’s sandstone formations that have been designated national parks—Arches, Bryce Canyon, Canyonlands, Capital Reef and Zion—and Utah is also rich in national forests, monuments and recreation areas. Tourists from around the world come to Utah to see the splendor of the red-rock formations, and the tiny tourist town of Moab in southeastern Utah is also a motion-picture and motorsports Mecca. Surrounded by Arches and Canyonlands National Parks, the Manti-LaSal National Forest to the southeast and the San Rafael Swell to the northwest, Moab has been immortalized in movies like Thelma and Louise, City Slickers II, Con Air, Galaxy Quest, the Chris Pine Star Trek reboot and countless westerns, from My Darling Clementine and The Searchers to The Lone Ranger.

If you don’t own a UTV, there are several rental and tour companies in Moab that will set you up if you plan ahead for next May 14th–18, 2019. Actually bending steel on Steelbender or any other Moab trail will set you back, though.
Most rides stage at the rally headquarters and are escorted to and from the trailhead by the sheriff’s department. Getting to the trail-ride lines early gives extra time to check out the wild builds and chat with ride participants. Slikrok had wild Maverick X3 and RZR XP Turbo builds with portals.

Looking at the breathtaking red-rock monoliths in person or on film is one thing, but climbing or transversing them is quite another. That’s why the many Moab 4×4 trails have been the site of the Rally on the Rocks (ROTR) for UTVs since 2008. After April’s Easter Jeep Safari, UTVs take over Moab for the ROTR, but UTV and 4×4 tour companies operate pretty much year round. Many local tour guides volunteer to be among the 50-plus leaders and sweeps for 74 daily guided rides over the five-day UTV jamboree. These 28 daily trail rides range from Novice (4) to Intermediate (12) to Expert (12), and the most difficult trails have names like Steel Bender, Golden Spike, Gold Bar Rim, Poison Spider, Metal Masher, Strike Ravine, Moab Rim, Cliffhanger, Area BFE, Behind the Rocks (our favorite) and Pritchet Canyon (9-plus-rated). One year, Cub Cadet came out to durability-test its new Challenger 750, tackling tougher trails each day, and new rally participants can do the same to hone driving skills. Fear not, the guides will spot and get you over the tougher obstacles.

While the ROTR guides do a great job of spotting and coaching trail riders over the harder obstacles, some get a little throttle-happy. Many 50-inch UTVs are on each daily ride, so you don’t have to own the latest and largest machines to have fun and get it done.
Rally on the Rocks has up to 28 daily ride choices, and the many trails offer all kinds of scenery, habitat types, obstacles and challenges. Many vendors also sponsor trail rides and hand out swag at lunch.

BEYOND THE SLICK-ROCK RIDES

Rides leave the Old Spanish Trail Arena with police escorts at 10 a.m. each day, and most rides return by 3 p.m. Before and after rides, more than 60 vendors display their latest products, offer rally specials and install their products. Textron became a title sponsor for 2018 and donated a Wildcat XX for the raffle, which was won by Ray Sanchez of Deming, New Mexico. Proceeds of the XX raffle went to Beacon and HMK after-school program charities, and rally participants also bought raffle tickets for tons of swag from Discount Tire, Camp Chef, Daystar, PCI, Rugged Radios, Rigid, PRP, HCR Racing, Raceline, D&P Performance, Razorback Off-Road, MTX, Axia, Pro Armor, KMC, STI, SLP, ITP, Walker Evans, GBC, Assault, Method, Tensor Tire, GMZ, Kicker/SSV Works, Sedona, Dynojet, and XTC.

Textron Off-Road donated a Wildcat XX to the ROTR raffle, with $20,000 in proceeds being split between Helen M. Knight Elementary and Beacon after-school programs. Ray Sanchez (third from left) of Deming, New Mexico, was stoked to win the Wildcat XX.
A flatbed trailer stacked with UTV swag, including two dozen sets of tires, were won by rally participants in the main raffle, and there was a smaller raffle in conjunction with the ice-cream social. The whole ROTR is geared towards family fun.
Increases in vendor participation has filled the Old Spanish Trail Arena so much that tables are no longer set up for the Friday BBQ dinner, so rally-goers eat in the bleachers and then get their raffle tickets ready for collecting swag.

The big raffles were Friday night, after a catered BBQ dinner, and the five-day rally also included a Discount Tire breakfast, ice-cream social and raffle, and daily demo rides by Can-Am, Textron and Yamaha. All this, an event T-shirt and more was a bargain at $135 for pre-registered participants, or people could walk up and attend for $35 per person per day. While some duner UTV jams have more attendees, Rally on the Rocks is the premier UTV trail-ride rally in the west, and the 2019 ROTR will be held May 14–18th.

Daily rides get back early enough in the afternoon to schedule demo rides with Can-Am, Textron, Yamaha and Cub Cadet, along with many aftermarket companies like HCR Racing
