GREAT AMERICAN SHORT-COURSE STARTS 2022 SEASON

TREY GIBBS AND POLARIS DOMINATE PRO PRODUCTION TURBOS

Great American Short-course (GAS) was supposed to start its 2022 season at Wild Horse Pass in Chandler, Arizona, but the tribe canceled and forced GAS to relocate the first double-header weekend to the San Bernardino County Fairgrounds in Victorville, California. Youth 1000s, 170s, SR1s, Unlimited UTVs, Production Turbos and Pro Stocks took to the track Friday for practice and then racing on Saturday and Sunday. Neither Pro Stock champion Dallas Nord (Yam) nor Production Turbo champ Chance Haugen (Pol) competed at the opener, and the biggest classes were Production 1000s and RZR 170s.

Ronnie Anderson showed great speed in Pro Production Turbos, leading the Saturday main early, but his RZR broke.

Round 1 fast qualifiers were Jason Weller (Yam) in Weller Racing SR1s, Cody Hodgen (Yam) in Pro Stocks, Trey Gibbs (Pol) in Production Turbos, Kyle Ahrenberg (Pol) in Unlimiteds, George Llamosas (Pol) in Youth 1000s, and Jake Hill (Pol) in 170s. Each class got a three-lap session each day before the longer mains with mid-race cautions to repack the field for better racing. For comparison in Round 2, Jason Weller turned a 53.021 in his SR1, Trey Gibbs turned a 50.011 in his Turbo S, and Cody Hodgson turned a 53.359 in his YXZ1000R. Gibbs was even faster than Pro 2 TQ Ricky Gutierrez’s 50.332.

GAS MAIN EVENTS

In Pro Turbos, Ronnie Anderson qualified third on Saturday to start on the second row behind Gibbs and Weller. Anderson shot into second place behind Gibbs and ahead of Chase Hill and “Bronco” Dan Kelly. Ronnie took over the lead and began to pull away until his RZR soured. Gibbs held on for the win ahead of Hill (Pol) and Oliver Golding (C-A). On Sunday, Gibbs again was TQ and winner of the main for a perfect weekend and maximum points (110). Jason Weller was second on Sunday after a bad race on Saturday, and Hill was third on Sunday and scored 99 points.

Trey Gibbs dominated the Pro Production Turbos, winning both mains after being top qualifier both days.

Production 1000s were dominated by Cody Hodgson and his Yamaha, as he was TQ and the main winner both days for a maximum points haul of 110Chad Williams qualified fifth both days but rebounded in both mains to take two seconds. Connor Barry made it an all-Yamaha podium on Saturday, but he couldn’t repeat on the Sabbath. Cole Gamma put his RS1 on the Sunday podium.

Cody Hodgson dominated the Pro Stock 1000s with two TQs and main-event wins.

Defending Youth 170 champion George Llamosas jumped to the Youth 1000s, but defending Y1000 champ Drake Mittag was also no-show. Llamosas dominated the weekend with two TQs and main wins for a perfect points haul of 110. Dominick Benites was second in qualifying and racing both days, while Tyler Shade was third on the clock and track.

Defending SR1 champion Jason Weller was top qualifier both rounds, but wife Corry took both mains.

Jake Hill was Youth 170 TQ on Saturday, but Declan Shields won that main over Hill and Ian Torfi. Triton Lawrence was TQ on Sunday, but Shields was not to be denied the win. Hill and Brixton Wirt filled out the 170 podium on Sunday.

George Llamosas isn’t defending his 2021 Youth 170 championship, and he dominated the Youth 1000s with two TQs and wins.
