Polaris expanded its General line for 2022 with the new Trailhead Edition XP and XP4, and Trailheads have a 3-D topo map of Wickenburg, Arizona’s, Crown King Mine embossed on the hood. Polaris also has a Premium Polaris Adventures Outfitter in Wickenburg, so we went out there to check out the Crown King and other mines and test the 2022 RZR XP4 1000 (October 2022). Not only does the Happy Trails Adventure Company of Arizona have some epic scenery, history, and trails to showcase, it’s one of the few Polaris Adventure outfitters to rent RZR S and XP Turbos. They even rent Corvettes and have been an outfitter since 2012.

Although helmets aren’t required for UTVs in Arizona, Polaris Adventures does require them for safety reasons, and HTAZ has plenty of all sizes. They also have ice, drinks and snacks.

A lot has changed since UTV Action was there in late spring, and HTAZ has gotten in new rolling stock. They used to rent Rangers but not anymore; they have General XP 1000s ($375/day) and XP4 1000s ($425/day), RZR XP 1000s ($375/day) and XP4s ($425/day), RZR Pro XP Turbos ($425/day) and XP4s ($500/day), and the new Pro/Turbo R Ultimates ($525/day) and R4s ($600/day). Rentals include tax and a tank of fuel, most have Ride Command with area trails  (or a tablet with Ride Command), and each is equipped with an NOAA Emergency Locator beacon. Since UTVs can be licensed for the street in Arizona, each has turn signals, mirrors and license plates, in addition to a roof and door inserts.

HTAZ has a Pro shop on site in case customers don’t have a helmet, gloves and goggles, and each rental gets an ice chest and water bottles for hydration. They also suggest trail snacks, sun screen, first aid kit, and layers of clothing including a rain suit in case of afternoon monsoons. Though they mostly rent, there are two tours – Williams Family Ranch and Box Canyon – that take two to three hours each. We did both and had a blast, especially in the Box Canyon section of the Hassayampa River and adjoining sand washes.

Wickenburg has lots of trails to explore, and the BLM Hassayampa Field Office includes Belmont and Castle Hot Springs Roads, Vulture Mine OHV Area with mountain trails, Hassayampa River/Box Canyon, and Harlquahala Mountain Summit Road (5670′ elevation). There is plenty of mining history, and the Arizona Peace Trail is about 65 miles west of Wickenburg. HTAZ is also opening a Scottsdale/Cave Creek outfitter location with only half-day rentals at press time. Once they get to know those trails, they’ll do tour loops.
