PRODUCT TEST: JT ALS-02 HELMET

WHAT IT IS:

JT Racing USA has a rich history in two-wheeled motocross but is now best known for paintball gear. In the ’80s, JT Racing blew minds with the ALS-1 and subsequent ALS-2 helmets that had a unique shape, swooping style and classic paint jobs. Champions like David Bailey, Ron Lechein, Broc Glover and Jean-Michele Bayle made the JT Racing brand famous, as did the Dalmatian line of riding gear. The original Air Line System (ALS) helmet used several vents for maximum cooling and an integrated visor for a unique, clean look and added roost protection. JT Racing USA reintroduced the helmet as the ALS-02 last year with new construction and technologies.

WHAT YOU GET:
Basically, you get a $300 helmet for $100! The ALS-02 has a hand-laid fiberglass shell around a molded EPS liner for maximum impact protection. No less than 11 entrance and exit vents in the shell and multiple liner channels move a tremendous amount of cooling air into, through and out of the helmet. The integrated visor is angled to provide a great view and roost protection, and is vented to reduce down-force pressure on the head and neck at high speeds. There are three shell sizes for an optimal fit: XS/S, M/L and XL/3XL. The ALS-02 has a removable, moisture-wicking, washable comfort liner and anatomical cheek pads for better comfort and fit. The 2013 ALS-02 comes in several color schemes: dalmatian, red/white/blue, white/black/orange, blue/orange, matte black/white, black/green, blue/white, white/blue, red/chartreuse and black/orange. It’s DOT- and ECE-approved, and the eyeport is tall and wide to accept most goggles.

PERFORMANCE:
Fit is good, and the helmet feels light. Venting is also good, as motion forces air through the multiple vents, breathable liner and into the channels in the EPS liner. The ALS-02 has a large eyeport that fits a wide variety of goggles, and it also has a larger visor than many modern helmets, so you don’t get as much roost in the face or sun in the eyes. Pop-off grommets on the cheek pads are backed up by hook-and-loop tape, and the liner is removable for washing. Our only gripe is that the visor position is fixed, so you can’t adjust it up or down.

THE VERDICT:
The JT Racing USA ALS-02 helmet is packed with lots of features. It fits well, flows a lot of cooling air, and the craftsmanship is excellent. Now that the ALS-02 has been discounted to $99, it’s not only a great deal, it’s a steal!
