MOOSE RACING 3-IN-1 RATCHET

WHAT IT IS: MOOSE RACING 3-IN-1 RATCHET

The Moose Racing 3-in-1 ratchet combines 1/2-inch, 3/8-inch and 1/4-inch socket drives into one tool, eliminating the need to carry separate ratchet handles for sockets with different drive sizes. The Moose Racing 3-in-1 ratchet retails for $25.95, about $6 more than a single ratchet handle.

MOOSE RACING 3-IN-1 RATCHET
Because it’s intended to save space, the 3-in-1 ratchet is 7 inches long. That’s plenty of leverage for removing most smaller fasteners, but less than you may need for larger fasteners that are really tight.

PERFORMANCE:

The Moose Racing 3-in-1 ratchet saves space, which is great in any toolbox and it also saves weight, which is especially important in toolkits we take along on the trail. The Moose ratchet also has a very fine gear drive, which helps in confined areas where it’s hard to get much “turn” on the ratchet handle.

There are several reasons why it won’t replace regular ratchets completely. The 3-in-1 ratchet is 7 inches long. That’s plenty of leverage for removing most smaller fasteners, but less than you may need for larger fasteners that are really tight. The 1/4-inch drive is on top of the 1/2-inch drive, so it takes some of the depth from any 1/2-inch drive socket you’re using and prevents the drive from fully engaging 1/2-inch drive extensions, Torx bits and hex bits. There’s also no quick socket release as on many ratchets, which is a minor negative but something to consider. The Moose ratchet’s one-year warranty isn’t as good as the lifetime warranty many Harbor Freight tools have, though the Moose ratchet has held up well for us.

THE VERDICT:

Moose Racing’s 3-in-1 ratchet won’t replace regular ratchets for every situation, but it does what it’s intended to do well. It saves space, weight and lets you use any 1/2-inch, 3/8-inch or 1/4-inch drive socket.
