UTVs RUN UP FRONT IN RALLY CAR RACE

— The Gorman Ridge Rally happened recently and there were several UTVs entered along with the many automotive rally cars. This is a popular event, since the course is located around 60 miles north of Los Angeles. The rally cars line up to be timed through each of the stages, which are run mostly on dirt roads. James Hill and co-driver Riley McGuinness won 6 of the 12 stages in their RZR XP 1000. Unfortunately they got a 3 minute time penalty on one transition between stages, which took them from first place overall…

RZR FIRE PREVENTION ADVICE

-- Sarge McCoy to the rescue! -- Dear Sarge, I have a 2012 Polaris RZR 800, and last fall I was riding where the leaves had fallen off the trees. The leaves had gotten wet and, when driven on, were picked up by the tires and thrown up onto the exhaust on the right side of the header from the engine. My friend was behind me and yelled, “Fire, fire!” at which point I stopped and got out and looked under the RZR and, yes, there was fire there. As I was brushing out the fire and touching the hot exhaust, I melted a…

CUSTOMIZING GONE WRONG

-- By Joe Kosch: Part of the fun of driving UTVs is modifying and customizing them, but you have to be careful when ordering parts. Let’s say you get the urge to build a monster UTV starting with a Polaris XP Turbo, a machine that’s a monster to begin with. You plan to stomp all the heavily modified two- and three-cylinder machines out there by dropping in a big six-cylinder car engine. Yeah, twice as many cylinders as a triple ought to do it! The right six-cylinder engine might do the job, but don’t pick the 4000cc…
