WHAT IT IS:
Pelican is a respected maker of waterproof, impact-resistant cases for nearly any purpose. Since a phone is such an important thing to take along on UTV rides, and most phones are vulnerable to damage from the wet conditions and bouncing around that are so common in off-road riding, we tested Pelican’s G40 Go case, which is perfect for phones and other small items. The outside of the case is 9.5 x 5 inches, and the interior is 7 x 3.5 x 1.6 inches; that’s enough space for large phones like the iPhone Xs Max and the Samsung Note 9. The G40 Go case is $39.95 and comes in a wide range of colors, including Surf Blue/Gray, White/Aqua, Blush/Gray and Anthracite/Gray, like our test case and several others.
The G40 is IP67 certified, which means it’s waterproof to 1 meter for 30 minutes, but we submerged it without a phone inside first just to be sure. Empty or with a phone, the case stayed perfectly dry inside. The case should have no problem shielding a phone from rain and splashes from puddles, and it’s small enough to fit in nearly any UTV glove box.
This case has a sturdy, easy-to-operate, single hinge latch; a rubberized bumper around most of its outside; and a removable divider inside where you can store things like a phone-charge cord and car keys. The divider also has pockets to hold identification and credit cards. The G40 has a high-quality feel, from the strength of the shell to the precise way it opens and closes.
At about $40, Pelican’s G40 Go case is far less expensive than replacing most phones. Some can be over $400, and it provides tough, waterproof protection for other small items.
