POLARIS DOMINATES UTV PROS AT WORCS ROUND 7
ON THE PODIUM: WORCS 2020 UTVS AT BLYTHE CA
The seventh round of the World Off-Road Championship Series (WORCS) was held at a brand-new venue for WORCS. The track, Shorty’s Sports Park, is located east of the Salton Sea in the Mojave Desert and featured deep sand and rocks similar to Lake Havasu. The track required constant attention and got rough as the races were run.
In Pro Production Turbo UTVs, Corbin Leaverton (Pol) jumped out front as he has all season, with Davi Haagsma (Pol) in hot pursuit. Haagsma took the lead on the third lap as Leaverton had to pit and dropped to eighth. Haagsma led three laps but also suffered a mechanical and DNF. Shawn Sexton (Pol), who had started seventh and worked up to third, took over the lead on the sixth lap and led to the checkers.
Beau Baron (Pol), who had started tenth and worked up to fourth by mid race, took over second from John Bonanno (C-A), who held on for third. Baron turned the fastest lap of the weekend, a 6:58.382, on the seventh lap.
In Pro Stock 1000 UTVs, Davi Haagsma jumped out to the first-wave lead and physically led the entire seven-lap race, ahead of Matthew Hancock (Pol). Baron worked up from fifth to third by mid race, where he physically finished. However, Cody Bradbury (Pol) had started midpack on the second wave and worked up from ninth to sixth by mid race, leading the second-wave RS1 of Dylan Lemburg (Pol). The duo crossed the finished line in fourth and fifth but had beaten the top-three physical finishers on adjusted time. Bradbury won over Lemburg, who turned the fastest lap of the race (a 7:28.312), by more than 11 seconds. And Dylan beat Davi by almost 20 seconds.
Obviously, the deep sand favored the Turbos, as the Pro Stocks were the last race on Saturday, and the Pro Turbos were the last Sunday 55-minute race. The next WORCS rounds will be the World Finals at Primm, Nevada, on November 20-22. Although listed as Rounds 8 & 9, Pro UTVs race only once over the weekend, the same as the Havasu rounds, so series championships will be decided with seven scores. Leaverton leads the Turbos by 23 points, and Baron leads the Pro Stocks by 7 points.
