HARBOR FREIGHT BAUER 20V DRILL/DRIVER KIT

— Testing a good portable drill at a good price —

Harbor Freight’s Bauer 20V Hypermax lithium 1/2-inch drill/driver kit includes the drill/driver, charger, battery, two screwdriver bits and a carry case. This drill is compact and lightweight, which makes it easy to handle in confined spaces like UTV interiors and engine compartments. The drill driver has an adjustable steel chuck that will accept bits up to1/2 inch, adjustable torque settings and all-metal gear construction for durability. Two speed settings and forward/reverse settings cover a wide range of drilling and sanding jobs. The kit retails for $69.99. Its size and specifications are similar to Ryobi’s $99.99 P1811 drill driver.

The battery slides horizontally into its locked position in the base of the drill, so it can’t drop off like the kind that plug in from the bottom and rely on clips to hold it in place that can weaken or fail.

PERFORMANCE:

UTVs present endless uses for a drill—from removing or running in rows of fasteners on body parts or engine covers to drilling holes for accessory wiring and switches to sanding or polishing out scratches. More often than not, there’s not much space to work, so the Bauer 20V’s compact size and lighter weight make it easier to use than larger drills, and it has more than enough power for most drilling jobs. The chuck’s torque adjustment prevents damage to fasteners that thread into plastic and other soft materials and provides full torque for drilling.

The engineering of Harbor Freight’s Bauer drill/driver kit is just as good as the drill itself. The tool is nicely balanced, and the controls have a quality feel. The battery slides horizontally into its locked position in the base of the drill, so the battery can’t drop off like the kind that plug in from the bottom if the clips that hold it weaken or fail to snap in place. The charger’s progress lights are large and easy to see, so you know when the battery is ready, even from a distance. The carry case has more than enough room for the drill, battery and charger, so it’s not hard to put everything away, and there’s enough room to take a small box of bits along too.

THE VERDICT:

Harbor Freight’s Bauer 20V Hypermax lithium 1/2-inch drill/driver is reasonably priced, and its size and power are perfect for the kind of work UTVs often require.
