The Spot Gen4 Satellite Tracker is a small device that can track your whereabouts and alert family or authorities if you need help or rescue in many remote areas using the Globalstar satellite network. The unit is less than half the size of a cell phone, weighing only 5 ounces, and is IP68 rated for water- and dust-proofing. You can zip-tie it to a UTV somewhere near the cargo area, clip it on your belt loop or even duct-tape it to any position with a clear path to the sky. With the basic subscription price of $14.95 per month, you can send those notifications every 5, 10, 30 or 60 minutes and use unlimited check ins or SOS calls. The unit is $149.95 and requires a $24.95 activation fee.

Here’s the map view you see when using the “Check In” feature, and, of course, you can zoom in for a closer, more accurate location. The tracking feature can show your location every 5, 10, 30 or 60 minutes.

The main benefit for UTV riders is that friends and family can keep an eye on you if you like to ride in remote areas. It can also be used to locate your vehicle if it is stolen. A series of pre-recorded messages can be delivered to those keeping track of you, such as “Made it to camp,” “On my way home” or “The trail is clear, bring the rest of the group in.” In emergencies, you can hit the “SOS” button to summon search and rescue teams.

We’ve used the Gen4 on two weekend trips so far. We tried the text alerts and the “Check In” feature. Both worked perfectly, and our location was spot on. The check-in feature sends an email to whomever you designate as “the watcher,” and it will notify them of your location on a map via the website.

If you worry about family members and the remote rides they go on, there’s no question you should get this for them. Or, if you feel safe knowing someone has your whereabouts, whether on a hunting trip in Arkansas or a race down the length of Baja, this product will put you at ease for sure. Spot also sells satellite phones that work better than some of today’s cell phones and don’t cost an arm and a leg to operate. Their Globalstar satellite network works and is easy enough for anyone to use, so, if you’ve considered it, do it. ο
