SUPERCHARGED YAMAHA YXZ 1000R

— Yamaha’s revolutionary YXZ1000R has been dominating UTV short-course racing and is making waves in longer courses as well. Nic Granlund not only won both the SxS Pro Stock and SxS Pro classes at the Glen Helen round of the World Off-Road Championship Series (WORCS), but he also won the 2017 UTV World finals and BITD UTV Winter Nationals in his 2016 supercharged LoneStar Racing/STV Motorsports YXZ1000R.

Nic Granlund dominated the ninth round of the WORCS UTVs, winning both the SxS Pro and SxS Pro Stock classes in his supercharged 2016 LSR/DWT/GBC/STV YXZ1000R.

   Packard Performance, of Turbo/Banshee fame, has the Yamaha covered with the $2695 Supercharger kit, which Granlund chose over Packard’s $6495 Premium Turbocharger kit. Packard also has Stage 1, 2 and 3 engine-mod levels that make up to 550 horsepower with the turbo. Granlund’s Packard supercharged YXZ1000R has about 132 rear-wheel horsepower, but it also gains low-end power in addition to the 50-horsepower gain on top at 4–6 psi with pump gas.

Engine modifications by CT Racing, Weller Racing and Packard Performance widened the powerband and pumped power output to 132 horsepower at the wheels, and Granlund depends on Torco lubricants in his race and daily-driven vehicles. Nic also valved the Fox 2.5 Podium RC2 shocks and set the cross-over rings for the dual-rate springs.

For a well-rounded racing package, Granlund started with a five-angle valve job and head porting by CT Racing and bolt-on supercharger kit with Donaldson air filter and canister, and the Packard kit’s ECU re-flash and piggyback fuel controller. Weller Racing supplied the dual-exhaust system ($1399), smog block-off plate ($45.99) and water-pump housing ($85) with temperature gauge. Shifting is upgraded with Packard’s Short Shift kit ($195), which reduces throw by 30 percent. The slightly modified supercharged YXZ makes about 97 foot-pounds of torque, so Nic had to upgrade the driveline to take the extra grunt. The LSR front and Summers Brothers rear axles are cryo-heat-treated for strength, as are the bearings, gears and internals. LSR’s mid-travel +3.5-inch A-arms and heavy-duty rear arms ($3750) work with the Fox 2.5 Podium RC2 shocks valved by Nic Granlund Motorsports and Double EE Racing rear torsion bar ($950).

NRG Innovations supplies the steering wheel and racing seat, while Hess quickens the steering ratio and over-rides the thermostat-controlled fans for maximum cooling. Packard’s billet shifter makes for quicker shifts with less throw.
Packard Performance’s $2695 YXZ Supercharger kit bolts on like an alternator for a 50-horsepower gain with pump gas at 4–5 psi, and it also adds huge torque gains and instant throttle response. The kit includes a positive-displacement roots supercharger; billet mounts, supports, intake tract, pulley and shaft assembly; Donaldson air filter and mount; hardware; spare belt; piggyback fuel controller; and ECU re-flash.

RAISING OTHER BARS

STV Motorsports upgrades the steering box with its billet box and tie-rod kit, and a Hess 2:1 steering quickener ($600) tightens handling with the NRG quick-release steering wheel. STV (Specialty Terrain Vehicles) also did the frame gusset kit, bumpers and cage, along with harnesses for the NRG custom seat. Brakes are upgraded with Galfer Wave rotors and brake lines, and DWT Sector beadlock wheels clamp 27-inch GBC Kanati Mongrel tires that Granlund custom grooves. Fronts are grooved for side bite, and the rears are grooved for forward bite. Cooling is upgraded with a Hess oversized radiator relocation kit ($900) and dual fans.

LoneStar Racing’s +3.5-inch mid-travel suspension kit brings the #68’s width to 71 inches, and Rev Up did the custom wrap. STV Motorsports fabricated the cage and front bumper, and Nic grooved his front GBC Mongrels for extra side bite and steering.
LSR heavy-duty rear arms and STV’s weld-on rear bumper beef up the rear end, and Granlund grooved the rear Mongrels for extra bite. Tire Blocks prevent flats and points-costing DNFs, as does the Hess radiator relocator kit.

Tire Blocks go inside the grooved Mongrels for flat prevention, and IMG mud flaps protect the rear CVs, brakes and carriers from serious roost. Nic also uses the stock YXZ skid plate. Since BITD and other racing organizations require radio communication for safety, Granlund uses Rugged Radios.
