Utah’s Sand Hollow State Park (SHSP) is not far from Zion National Park, and spectacular red-rock formations make SHSP feel and look like OHV heaven. It has a great combination of red rock, red sand and desert, and that is why Sean Reddish moved the World Off-Road Championship Series (WORCS) headquarters to Hurricane’s SHSP, which will host WORCS round seven on April 21st–23rd. When Moab Rally on the Rocks co-promoter Lanse Churnos wanted to create a fall rock-crawling UTV jamboree, he teamed up with Reddish to put on a three-day event in November of 2015. With 15,000 acres of prime riding, Sand Hollow State Park was the obvious choice, and UTV Action had so much fun, we had to return for the second SxS Adventure Rally.

Beautiful scenery is a huge part of the rally, with Sand Hollow Reservoir to the north and Washington Valley to the west. Mix in the thrill of exploration in the rocks and speed in the dunes and desert.

TACKLING A DOZEN TRAILS

Guided rides leave the rally headquarters each of the three days, and trail-ride choices actually dropped from 15 to 12 for 2016, as one moderate and two easy rides that require trailering to trailheads were dropped. The easy trails are UTV- and ATV-friendly and are dubbed Honeymoon Trail, Dinosaur Tracks, Fort Pierce Wash and Top-of-the-World Loop. Moderate trails include Upper West Rim, Milts Mile/Double Sammy and Fault Line/Lower West Rim. The five difficult trails—Smurfette/Double Sammy, Sliplock/John’s Trail, Plan B, The Ledges and The Maze—test driving skills and showcase southern Utah’s beauty with awesome views of Washington Valley and St. George. Difficult trails have bypass routes around the worst obstacles, and several 50-inch UTVs were on the moderate rides with no drama. Difficult rides are for 60–72-inch UTVs, and guides spot for rally-goers too.

The SxS Adventure Rally is a three-day jamboree with daily guided and demo rides in Utah’s Sand Hollow State Park. Guided rides are rated for difficulty, with Double Sammy being one of the more challenging rock-crawler routes.

So, each rally participant gets to try out three guided rides on great trails, with lunch and photography stops along the way, and Camp Chef sponsors a hot breakfast each ride morning. Most rides return back to camp by 3 p.m., so many groups head back out for unguided open riding or cruise vendor row for hot deals. Rally participants get a free breakfast every morning, and walk-ups can participate for $110 for all three days or $35 per day. Children 10 and under are free, and registration also includes a free SXSAR T-shirt, insurance and all BLM fees. Saturday’s raffle dinner is an extra $5.

The Maze is one of the tougher and most scenic trails, and there are bypass routes around the toughest obstacles. Difficult trails were reserved for 64-plus-inch UTVs, and we had to winch on our Maze ride.

DEMO RIDES AND VENDOR SWAG

CST Tires is the title sponsor and Polaris is the presenting sponsor, donating a 2016 RZR 900 Trail Edition for a $100-per-ticket auction benefiting the local vet center. Friday evening is the rally raffle, with great swag from Camp Chef, Can-Am, Arctic Cat, Polaris, Yamaha, HCR Racing, STI, D&P Performance, SxS Performance, Kombustion Motorsports and Wheel Pros Powersports. Better yet, Arctic Cat, Can-Am, Polaris, Yamaha and HCR Racing hold daily demo rides, so enthusiasts can check out the latest and greatest UTVs in a wide variety of terrain and technical sections.

Guide Dean Bulloch tackles one of the gnarliest rally obstacles, Toilet Bowl, which is the starting point for the Ledges, which snakes along the edge of the 1000-foot escarpment. It’s not for the faint of heart!

Rally-goers can camp in five VIP reserved-group campsites, 6 pull-through power spaces or 20 (non-powered) pull-through spots by calling ahead ([435] 215-9679) and reserving spots, or they can camp on the beach of Sand Hollow Reservoir ([435] 680-0715). We stayed with the Friday Night Ride crew from Castaic and had a great time. Flags are required at Sand Hollow State Park, and participants can also stay at nearby Sand Hollow Resort ([435] 656-4653) and drive UTVs to the rally.

With the rally taking place over Veterans Day, promoters held a Color Guard flag ceremony and paid tribute to all who served. Also, Polaris donated a RZR 900 Trail for an auction benefiting the St. George Veteran’s Center.
