HOW-TO: Setting up UTV suspension

Most ATV and UTV suspensions are really pretty similar. Whether it be race or play, swingarm, A-arm or crazy long-travel trailing arms, they are pretty much all controlled by some type of coil-over shock absorber. While many of the newer performance models might have multiple adjustment options, even the most basic utility options will have some sort of adjustment. The factory setup is designed to “perform” for a very wide range of users and conditions; this set “factory” setup is not going to be ideal for you end users,…

PROJECT TEST: ADVENTURE RZR XP 1000

In our January 2014 issue, we reported on how Allen Knowles of CT Racing set up his Polaris RZR XP 900 for comfort while exploring and getting to prime hunting and fishing spots. Scott Lee of Tri-State RV Supply, HCR Racing and MCXUSA Turbos had the same idea when he built this RZR XP 1000 for Karen Alstott so she could go exploring and rock crawling at Moab and Sand Hollow. Although he has access to all of the long-travel suspension of HCR Racing and 180-horsepower MCXUSA turbos featured in last month’s shootout against the…

SHOOTOUT: Yamaha Raptor 700 vs. YFZ450 Special Editions

When it comes to the current state of sport-quad supremacy, Yamaha just might have the market on lockdown. The fuel-injected YFZ450R is pretty much race-ready off the showroom floor, and the EFI-fed Raptor 700 is the only other current big-bore sport quad worth mentioning. These ATVs have proven themselves in nearly every discipline of ATV riding and racing, but if your thing happens to be the sand, the Yamahas are even more of a no-brainer. While Suzuki and Kawasaki are out, and Honda is still pushing the same exact bike it…

Suzuki LT500R by Duncan Racing

Suzuki’s LT500R is the stuff of ATV legends. Think a four-stroke 450 is fast? Imagine the performance potential of a 500cc, liquid-cooled, power-valved two-stroke! Most of today’s riders can’t even comprehend what a machine like that would be like, but Suzuki offered the mighty 500 from 1987 to 1990. Its massive power earned it the nickname “Quadzilla,” and it developed a following that’s still going strong today. Duncan Racing (DR) applied the best of today’s performance technology to the legendary LT500R and invited ATV…

PROJECT MACHINE: Matt Hancock’s Mean Maverick Racer

Rro Motorsport’s Matt Hancock is quickly proving that he can adapt to just about any vehicle in any off-road discipline. Growing up in the deserts surrounding Phoenix, Arizona, Matt started racing ATVs in the Whiplash desert series and progressed to the BITD Pro ATV Class as soon as he was old enough. Matt and his brother Jeff made the BITD Pro podium quite a few times but could never quite seem to top it. A few years ago, Jeff took a break from racing and Matthew dove headfirst into racing the WORCS Series. Following his…

TOP 10 DUNE SYSTEMS: Guide to the best places to sling sand!

If you watched the 2013 Dakar Rally, you were likely awed by the video of Robby Gordon ripping down the face of a 3000-foot Peruvian sand dune at well over 120 mph. The Dakar route also included Peru’s Ica Desert (“Endless Dunes”) in 2012, but the Dakar didn’t visit Peru this year, so Chile’s huge coastal dunes had to suffice. While Peru’s Cerro Blanca, “The Everest of the Desert,” is 6,824 feet above sea level, Chile’s Cerro Medanoso is “only” 1800 feet high. It’s in the Atacama Desert, and Dakar competitors have to carry…

PROJECT ATV: DUNCAN RACING YAMAHA WARRIOR

Pro-level motocross and off-road riders turn to Duncan Racing International (DRI) to build championship-winning machines, but DRI doesn’t only develop engine and suspension packages for 450 race quads. They’ve got a wide range of upgrades for most popular sport ATVs, and all the parts are tested with the same concern for performance and reliability as those for the most serious competition machines. We wanted to see what Duncan Racing could do for the popular Yamaha Warrior 350 without spending too much. Since the…

UTV TEST: Kymco UXV 700i 4×4

If the prices of UTVs in the 700cc to 800cc range are pushing you toward smaller machines, you may not have seen all the 700s. Kymco’s 700cc UXV 700i is a sport utility UTV aimed at class favorites like Yamaha’s Viking 700, the Kawasaki Teryx and Honda’s Pioneer 700, but it’s less expensive. WHO IS KYMCO? Established in 1963, Kymco is one of the world’s largest producers of scooters, a growing ATV, UTV and motorcycle manufacturer, and a major manufacturer of original-equipment parts for the automotive industry. Kymco’s…

Honda released several early 2016 ATVs, and more are on the way. The new models are familiar, but there are some interesting visual changes. The 2016 250X is available in red with white fenders and a red seat, or with white bodywork with a black seat. Both new models have sporty black wheels and black frames. MACHINE TEST: 2015 Polaris Sportsman ETX

Polaris had a great run with the Sportsman 400 High-Output (2008–2014), and it was a value-menu model in the last few years as Sportsman displacement grew to 850cc and then 1000cc. For 2015, Polaris scrapped the 455cc SOHC engine with 34mm Mikuni CV carburetor and replaced it with the 325cc ProStar DOHC EFI engine from the Sportsman Ace to create the all-new Sportsman ETX 4x4 ATV. Wrapping that stellar engine in a lower and slimmer frame and plastic creates an allnew entry into the economy 4x4 ATV market. Let’s check out the…
