Unexpected uses for UTV’s even surprise the people who design them. I’ve heard more than a few representatives from UTV manufacturers say they’re surprised at how many uses enthusiasts find for their vehicles. Now that we see how useful compact machines that take people into challenging off-road terrain can be, we wonder how we ever got by without them. Even sport machines that are focused on performance and have far less cargo space than utility UTVs get used for tasks their designers never dreamed of.
UNEXPECTED USE FOR UTV’S: RIDING WITH BIGFOOT
Recently, Unexpected uses for UTV’s appeared in a television program where a group of investigators used a UTV in their search for Bigfoot. I don’t follow this subject closely, but I stayed tuned to check out the UTV. It was a pre-X3 Can-Am Maverick. The show is new, but it seems this search for Bigfoot has been going on for as long as I can remember. So far, the only evidence of the creature is a few fuzzy videos, a few more fuzzy photos, bits of hair and plaster casts of what may be footprints—from who or what no one is quite sure. As I watched the show, it occurred to me that I could be watching the smartest Bigfoot hunters ever.
This team may have realized a search for something that doesn’t exist could go on forever and could be terribly boring and difficult on foot. So, why not have a blast riding around in the woods in a UTV while you find nothing? The investigators clearly didn’t expect to find the creature. If they had, they would have had a four-seater so they could give Bigfoot a ride back to camp.
UNEXPECTED USE FOR UTV’S: REPAIRING VANDALISM BY MULES
I’ve had unexpected uses for UTVs crop up myself. Those experiences showed me sport models have a lot more utility value than even their manufacturers give them credit for. Has your daughter’s pet mule badly bent a steel fencepost in a spot not easily accessible with a truck? A Polaris RZR 900 trail had no trouble getting into position to pull the post straight again.
UNEXPECTED USE FOR UTV’S: SPORT UTV TRANSFORMS INTO LOGGING TRUCK
I had to remove a tree recently, and a sport UTV was all I had on hand. So, I decided to see how well it could help with the cleanup. The Maverick Sport Max turned out to be a better logging truck than I ever imagined. Its small cargo bed held a load of large trunk sections nicely, and the front- and rear-seat area had plenty of space for thinner, longer branches.
UNEXPECTED USE FOR UTV’S: SHOWING KINDNESS TO VEGETATION VANDALS WITH A UTV
One task I never expected to use a UTV for is squirrel relocation. It turns out a UTV is the ultimate machine for it. For some reason, destructive ground squirrels are finding the plants and trees on my property more appealing than ever. At the same time, our patrol cat is regularly asleep on the job while squirrels commit vegetation vandalism. I’d like to see them relocated to squirrel heaven, but more humane members of my household came up with a kinder plan. Using a trap harmless to the squirrels, we capture the vegetation vandals and I transport them by UTV to a remote location far away from human homes. In my opinion, nothing beats a UTV for getting a squirrel out of town and way back into nature quickly.
If you’ve found an unusual use for a UTV or seen one used in an unusual way, UTV Action would like to know about it. Please send a brief description and a photo if possible to [email protected].
