high and low range. The Fox live Valve models also have launch mode that allows full throttle acceleration from a standing start. Front travel on 1000-XS models is 14.4 inches in front and 15.1 in back.

Honda’s computer-controlled Fox Live Valve suspension delivers a smoother ride in slow and fast driving, and the system also offers better control and stability because it’s so aware and responds so quickly. Sensors monitor the engine, transmission, steering, brakes, G-forces and the vehicle’s angle and continuously adjust the suspension accordingly. The system firms the outside shocks during cornering, firms the front shocks during braking, and it even sets the suspension for smooth jump landings. In addition to instant automatic adjustability, Honda’s Live Valve suspension also offers two dashboard button-selectable modes, a comfort focused standard mode and sport mode for fast driving. The base model has Fox QS3 shocks with easy three position manual compression damping adjusters. Two-inch shock bodies are used on the front and 2.5” bodies on the rear. A roof is standard equipment on both models.

YAMAHA YXZ1000R

Yamaha first introduced the pure-sport YXZ1000R for model year 2016, and the 12-valve, DOHC triple fed by three 41mm EFI throttle bodies with 11.3:1 compression revolutionized the sport UTV world. New for 2024, the YXZ1000R upgrades its five-speed, sequential-shift transmission with manual clutch for a six-speed with 40-percent lower first gear, optimized ratios for second through sixth, and increased clutch durability. The YXZ has racked up many wins and championships, and lessons learned from racing led to several revisions for the 2019 YXZ including the rear-mounted radiator and aerodynamic bodywork for optimum high- and low-speed cooling. The YXZ1000R sports 16.2 inches of front and 17 inches of rear travel with race-ready Fox Podium 2.5 RC2 shocks featuring high-and low-speed compression adjusters, rebound adjusters, and dual-rate springs with adjustable cross-overs. Also new for 2024, YXZs have a higher electrical output via a 1,000-Watt ACM and four power ports (2 front, 2 rear) for accessories, and its MSRP dropped $1,000.

YAMAHA YXZ1000R SPORT SHIFT/XT-R

Yamaha’s second pure-sport UTV was the 2017 YXZ1000R Sport Shift, which replaced the YXZ’s manual clutch with an automatic clutch and console shifter with aluminum paddle shifters on the steering wheel. The Yamaha shift program automatically down-shifts if the driver stops without down-shifting, and the Sport Shift also has a launch mode for pure-sport performance. Other than those drive-line modifications, the Sport Shift has the same powerplant, suspension, bodywork, brakes, and handling as the YXZ1000R. New for 2024, the new Six-speed transmission has Yamaha Auto-Shift Technology with three transmission modes – Auto, Sport Auto, and Sport Shift – the latter for those that want a more driver-connected feel shifting manually with paddle shifters. The clutch is also new with a finned hub, more oil-lubrication ports, and new YCC-S shift programming for increased durability. First gear is 40-percent lower, and other gear ratios are optimized. Also new for 2024, YXZs have a higher electrical output via a 1,000-Watt ACM and four power ports (2 front, 2 rear) for accessories, and its MSRP dropped $1,000.

The Sport Shift XT-R extreme-adventure package upgrades to a heavy-duty front bumper with grab bars and integrated WARN 4500-pound winch package, Maxxis Carnage 29-inch 8-Ply tires on bead-lock wheels, enhanced full-length under-body protection, center-mounted auxiliary LEDs, and rear-view mirror. The extreme-adventure package adds 102 pounds to the Sport Shift’s weight, and the XT-R comes only in Titanium and Tactical Black.

YAMAHA WOLVERINE X2 1000 R-SPEC/XT-R

Based on the Wolverine X2 850 platform, the X2 1000 adds all-new suspension A-arms that bring width 1.5 inches out to 63.6 inches, and they’re mated with Sachs ZX piggyback shocks with adjustable high- and low-speed compression and preload. Front travel jumps from 8.7 inches on the 850 to 13.3 inches on the X2 1000, while rear travel increases from 9.3 inches to 15.5 inches. Both X2s have a wheelbase of 83.7 inches.  The X2 1000 also has front and rear sway-bars to fight body roll while allowing articulation on uneven terrain, and it weighs 131 pounds less than the RMAX2.

Take that nimble and compact platform and add an RMAX 1000-inspired 999cc inline twin with DOHC, eight valves, and dual 48mm EFI throttle bodies that deliver an 8,500 rpm redline. The Wolverine X2 1000 is designed to top out at around 70 mph via Yamaha’s Real-world Yamaha Chip-Controlled Throttle (YCC-T) that’s tuned to deliver smooth and linear response. The X2 1000 is also pre-wired for the RMAX’s Yamaha D-Mode accessory switch (a $99.99 accessory) with Sport Mode for maximum power and acceleration, Trail Mode for more linear and smooth response, or Crawl Mode with moderated throttle response and acceleration. All three D-Modes also fine-tune engine braking for conditions and performance. R-Specs have rear over-fenders, while XT-Rs get painted bodywork, sun top, rear-view mirror, four over-fenders, color-matched interior, and a Warn VRX-45 winch.
