WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW ABOUT OFFSET WHEELS

— WIDER IS NOT ALWAYS BETTER, SAYS SARGE McCOY —

Dear Sarge,
I purchased some 4×4 offset rims and new 30×10-14 Mongrel tires. While
I like the traction, I do not like what they did to the steering feel. They feel twitchy, and the vague feel is not at all confidence-inspiring. What do you recommend for better tires?

Boot, you have excellent desert tires right now! The mistake you made was changing the front-wheel offset. When you change wheel offset, you also change “road” feel. The twitchy feeling and the feeling of being less connected with the Zooter is due to the wheels. If you went back to the stock 5×2 front- wheel offset, I think you will find there will be a reduction of twitchiness and the steering will be more responsive and lighter. Note that the taller tires help with steering feel, but not enough to overcome 2 extra inches of front-wheel offset. Count off 50, Boot, for not doing enough recon before “wasting” your pay on the wrong rims! Dismissed!
