WHERE TO RIDE AND RACE YOUR UTV: BOULDERS & CINDERS OHV AREAS

TWO OHV AREAS NORTH OF PHOENIX ARIZONA

Boulders OHV is a popular staging area for the Lake Pleasant/Hieroglyphic Mountain OHV recreation area, which showcases a motorized off-highway route system in the scenic Upper Sonoran desert landscape. With over 200 miles of unimproved backcountry roads, UTV/ATV trails and single-track dirt bike trails, ranging from 1,700 to 3,500 feet in elevation, this recreation area is bound to please any OHV enthusiast.

Boulders OHV area is less than an hour north of Phoenix and a popular area for suspension testing.

The semi-primitive staging area has over 10 acres available for dry camping and includes a vault restroom and information kiosk.

Boulders has 10 acres of dispersed dry camping and vault toilets but no hook-ups or water.

Located 45 miles north of Phoenix and 8 miles west of Lake Pleasant Regional Park, the boulders entrance is between mile markers 11 and 12 on SR74 on the north side of the road. Desert racers use many of the trails for testing for Baja or AZOP Grand Prix races in AZ.

ESCAPE THE HEAT AT CINDER HILLS

When the summer heat ramps up, Arizona OHV enthusiasts head up to Cinder Hills, which is a scenic recreation area northeast of Flagstaff. Its numerous volcanic cinder cones and craters surrounded by a Ponderosa Pine forest gives the area its unique value. Elevation starts at 6,900 feet. Many Arizona OHVers head to Cinders for July 4th, and make plans for the July 25-26 AZOP Grand Prix there.

Huge cinder hills are a natural dyno, as horsepower is sapped by the steep inclines and coarse volcanic cinders.

Approximately 13,500 acres in the Cinder Hills has been designated for off-highway vehicle recreation. Within the 13,500 acre area, portions will have use restricted to a relatively dense network of designated routes through forests. Generally unrestricted use will be on areas devoid of vegetation or with sparse vegetation with a coarse volcanic cinder soil. Huge hills require a lot of horsepower, so this is a favorite place for turbo UTVs and 4×4, high-Hp trucks and buggies.

Many OHV trails snake through pine forests, and Arizona Off-road Promotions holds a UTV, ATV and dirt bike Grand Prix there July 25th and 26th.

Take US89 about 7 miles north of the Flagstaff Mall, and then turn right (east) on FR776. Visitors can camp in dispersed areas for up to 14 days.
