Although most of the Oregon Dunes National Recreation Area remains closed, the Suislaw National Forest opens to OHV use today on a limited basis, including parts of the dunes in the Winchester bay area. According to the MIC Covid-19 update page, ODF OHV trails are open, although campgrounds are closed.
Other Oregon parks will slowly return to offering services beginning the week of May 11th. Dunes at Coos Bay and Florence remain closed, but OHV trails accessed through Half Moon Bay and Riley Ranch county parks within Douglas and Coos Counties and the Suislaw NF are open!
Also, according to the Reedsport Chamber of Commerce (www.reedsport.org, 541-271-3495), Dunefest is on for July 21-26, 2020.
NOTE FROM SUISLAW NATIONAL FOREST: With some coastal communities starting to ease COVID-19 restrictions as they feel it’s safe to do so, we are supporting Douglas and Coos counties to provide access for OHV riding on the dunes through county lands at Riley Ranch and Half Moon Bay county parks for day use, starting today, May 8th, 2020. Riders must adhere to county regulations and should be prepared to find services, including bathrooms, limited or unavailable.
At this time we are also working on plans to begin the phased transition to reopen some developed recreation sites, both on and off the dunes, in the coming weeks.
All of this is contingent on you! Follow local and state guidelines for social distancing and traveling away from home, avoid crowding by sticking with your family unit and visiting during non-peak hours, and plan to be self-sufficient as facilities such as bathrooms may not be available. We’ll continue to monitor and evaluate safety conditions at our recreation sites and will modify our plans as needed. Be safe and have fun out there!
