WHERE TO RIDE & RACE YOUR UTV: MOAB RALLY ON THE ROCKS

MOAB OHV MECCA IN UTAH MAY 12-16 2020

This being the 10th year of the Discount Tire Rally on the Rocks (ROTR) at Moab, Utah’s Old Spanish Trail Arena, the ROTR Crew has some added events and giveaways for the five-day festival, held may 12-16. First off, 200 raffle tickets will be sold for $100 apiece to win a 2020 Kawasaki Teryx KRX1000 Sport UTV, with the winner picked at the Grand Raffle Friday night! Proceeds all go to local Moab charities.

Kawasaki steps up big time for the 10th ROTR, donating a 2020 Teryx KRX1000 to be raffled off for charity and conducting Teryx demo rides.

Other 10th-anniversary additions include a Free Spaghetti dinner and a $4,500 in prizes raffle that will be held Wednesday May 13th from 5-7pm, sponsored by GBC, Walkers Evans Racing and Can-Am. On Thursday the 14th, Assault Industries, Maxxis Tires and PRP Seats will sponsor a Free Taco dinner and another $4,500 in raffle prizes at the Old Spanish Trail Arena.

No taco/spaghetti tickets will be passed out at the arena, so go to www.rallyontherocks.com to register for the rally and the spaghetti and taco dinners and raffles.

The hardest part of Moab Rim trail is the very first obstacle, but the effort is worth the rest of the ride.

Monday is vendor set-up day and onsite registration, and guided rides start Tuesday, departing at 10am. Thursday begins with the Discount Tire Breakfast at the arena, and guided rides continue all five days. Most rides get to the trailhead via police escorts, while a few require trailering.

New this year, all escorted rides have to include only street-legal UTVs, and Utah requires license plate, insurance, turn signals, horn and side mirrors. See the link on the website if you’re not street-legal for Utah. Also, there have been some complaints from residents about loud UTVs ripping through town. Noisy UTVs at this year’s ROTR could make the 10th-annual ROTR the last one! Keep it quiet and cool in town!

Steel Bender is a scenic and challenging trail with a rating of 6.

Registration is $35 per person per day attending, with a discounted rate for third or fourth persons. Dinner (Friday), T-shirts, Hoodies, and flags are optional.

Check the website for daily trails options; Tuesday has 12 with 10 escorted and 2 trailered, Wednesday has 16 rides with 11 escorted and 5 trailered, Thursday has 17 with 12 escorted and 5 trailered, Friday has 15 with 10 escorted and 5 trailered, and Saturday has 13 with 10 escorted and 3 trailered.

Most rides get a police escort through Moab; sign up, line up and have fun!

Trails and ratings are:

Easy: Chicken Corners (2), 3-D (3)(T), Kane Creek (3), Jackson Hole (3), Gemini Bridges (3)(T), Top of the World (3)(T), Picture Frame Arch (3), and Onion Creek/Thompson Canyon (3)(T).

Moderate: Dellenbaugh Tunnel/Secret Spire (3)(T), Dome Plateau (4)(T), Fins ’N Things (4), Hook ’N Ladder (4)(T), Hey Joe Canyon (4)(T), Seven Mile Rim (4)(T) and Porcupine Rim (4+).

Hard/Extreme: Hell’s Revenge (5+), Steel Bender (6), Strike Ravine (6), Gold Bar Rim (6+)(T), Poison Spider (7)(T), Metal Masher (7)(T), Moab Rim (7+), Cliffhanger (8), Behind the Rocks (8+) and Pritchett Canyon (10).

If there’s a (T) behind the rating, you must trailer to the trailhead. Trails 8 or above require a winch and strap, and 10 is for only the most experienced drivers and spotters. The ROTR is less than two months away, and preferred trails are filling up fast, so register now! The website also has answers to often-asked questions for first-time rally participants.

GBC is sponsoring the free spaghetti dinner and donating tires to a $4,500 raffle. Many vendors also sponsor trial rides and hand out swag at lunch.
