THE UTVS OF SUPERMOTOCROSS
INSIDE THE FACTORY TEAMS' AND PROMOTERS' TRACK-SIDE RIDES
For years, UTVs have been an integral part of Supercross, AMA Motocross Nationals, and now combined Supermotocross (SMX). From the moment the Feld SX crew arrives at the stadium to build the track to tearing it down for the next round, they use UTVs for operations. All of the factory SMX teams have UTVs to shuttle team members, VIPs, and cargo before and after races, and they also set their UTVs up for trackside support with spare wheels, parts, and tools. And, most importantly, the Alpinestars Mobile Medical Unit uses UTVs to transport injured athletes to the new mobile medical trauma trailer for evaluation and X-rays.
Most teams choose recreation-utility UTVs and remove the cages so they’ll fit inside team haulers, but the Monster Energy Star Racing Factory Yamaha team had a Yamaha Viking with cage and roof at Anaheim 1, and Honda Factory HRC Progressive also had a cage and roof on its Pioneer 1000. This is for the safety and comfort of the passengers, and also to set a good example for UTV safety. The Alpinestars Mobile Medical Unit leaves the cage on its two specially-outfitted diesel Mule 950s, and they also have a Mule SX for trackside operations. These UTVs are used throughout the 31-round SMX world championship season, and you’ll see most teams of the ATV-MX Nationals with UTVs set up with water tanks and power washers.
Here’s how the factory SMX teams roll in the pits and trackside.
