SHOCK THERAPY MAVERICK X3 TURBO R

— Making the fastest Can-Am UTV even faster —

Whenever a new high-performance UTV is introduced, Shock Therapy (ST) gets one through Arizona’s Ride Now dealerships and goes to work on improving the suspension. We’ve tested Shock Therapy’s Maverick X3 suspension mods early in development and after ST perfected both the X3 and Max X3 X rs suspension, but ST is also developing bump-steer delete tie-rod kits, a billet steering rack, its own EPS unit with double the power, heavy-duty radius rods and 930 rear-bearing carriers for Maverick X3s. We got a chance to check out the ST Maverick X3 X rs going big during Camp RZR Glamis, and then the ST X3 pre-ran the Baja 1000 course with zero failures in 1350 miles. They didn’t even have to change a CVT belt. Here’s the build info on the ST X3 X rs.

Shock Therapy’s Maverick X3 X rs floats over dune chop much better with its three-pronged shock mods, and the Sand Tires Unlimited Tribute and Blackbird 31-inch paddles give it the grip to rip out of turns.

SINISTER FABRICATION MAVERICK

Sinister Fabrication (SinFab) built the race-legal X3 cage with roof and front and rear intrusion bars, plus a bed-eliminator cage with a spare tire mount. SinFab also fabricated the tubular half-door frames with slam-latches, and ST made the door skins. ST also makes its own bead-lock wheels, but they’re not for sale, and they grip Sand Tires Unlimited Blackbird SR-31 front and Tribute rear paddle tires. Being long-time desert racers, ST went with Status Racing Ring composite suspension seats (now owned by PRP) with PRP harnesses. Depending on the model, Status Racing seats are $899 to $1999 (carbon fiber) each.

Shock Therapy’s X3 front torsion bar starts out 10% stiffer than the OEM bar and adds 10% stiffness for each mounting hole inward. Mounts are more rigid as well. ST is also developing a billet X3 steering rack and higher-output EPS unit to work with its bump-steer delete tie-road kit.

For power, ST went with Unobtainium Welding’s full titanium X3 exhaust. Unobtainium Racing builds custom Ti exhausts for Porsche, Ferrari, Lamborghini, McLaren, Lotus and many more high-end sports cars. Unobtainium’s X3 Ti exhaust is $1,813.50 (Canadian), while the stainless system is $1,293.50 (Canadian). The company also has an RZR XP Turbo Ti Sport exhaust for $2,333.50 (Canadian). Queen Racing in nearby Havasu did the ECU re-flash for the Ti exhaust.

Justin Smith went with a PCI Comlink X radio and intercom system and PCI Lowrance HDS7 Gen3 Baja GPS (starting at $899.99) for pre-running the 50th Baja 1000. He also uses PCI’s RaceAir Dual clean-air pump ($199.99) for pre-running and racing. Justin finished off the X3 build with a Shock Therapy wrap (starting at $585) by Wolf Designs.

Unobtainium Fabrication specializes in high-end titanium exhausts for exotic cars, turbo UTVs and watercraft; the Ti X3 full system would be $1,445.78 in U.S. dollars. SinFab incorporated a spare-tire holder into the bed eliminator, and ST’s X3 DRS kit eliminates the OEM third rear springs and cross-over rings for ST’s silent rings.

SHOCK THERAPY MAVERICK X3 MODS

After developing Ride-Improvement System (RIS) valving and Dual-Rate Spring (DRS) kits, Justin and Ernie went back to the beginning and developed Maverick X3 IBP Series 6 mods for the Fox Internal-ByPass 2.5 front and 3.0 rear X3 X rs shocks. Series 6 modifies the IBP sleeves with more ports for factory reeds, giving the IBPs more blow-off opportunities during the stroke for about $100 per shock ($399.80). ST then worked up new RIS valving specs ($749.95) and DRS ($995) spring rates to work best with the Series 6 IBP mods.

Status Racing’s Ring seats are customizable for a perfect fit (hips, shoulders, etc.) with a composite seat base/back for $899 to $1199 or carbon fiber frame for $1699 to $1999. GT seats fit those with a 32- to 34-inch waist, while GT-X seats are for people with up to a 38-inch waist.

ST developed its bump-steer delete tie-rod kit ($274.95) and has been putting the finishing touches on its billet X3 steering rack; the RZR XP Turbo billet Race Rack is $995. ST is also making its own X3 EPS unit; it will have twice the assist (wattage) power as the OEM X3 unit, plus an adjustment knob for fine-tuning assist. This goes with the ST X3 front torsion bar kit ($499.95), and ST is also working on a rear torsion bar that uses the OEM mounting points and will go for $399.99 with links. Oversized rear bearing carriers and bearings are also in the works for the Maverick X3 and Max X3.
